An old must have from her college days

30 Aug, 2012

Husker football season starts this Saturday!

Who-Hoo!

I’m a little bit of a fan.  As my husband will so kindly point out, “Les, do you even know the names of the players?”

The answer to that question is usually, “Yes, a few.”  Truth is, husker football simply reminds me of college.

And college was fun.

It’s where I met Kyle.

It’s where I met some of my best friends.

It’s where I made some of my very best memories.

Husker football also reminds me of food, food, and more food.  And then a big comfy sweatshirt to wear while I chow down on all that food.  That’s where my must haves come into play.

Let me introduce you to my favorite sweatshirt.  His name is “Husker Sweatshirt with Holes in the Sleeves.”  I think it’s catchy.

When I first stepped onto UNL’s campus 12 years ago, I had “Husker Sweatshirt with Holes in the Sleeves” with me.

He’s been worn on game days, on cold days, on hot days.  Non-husker fans threw spit wads at his sleeves.

That was a fib.  They didn’t.  But I bet they wanted to.

“Husker Sweatshirt with Holes in the Sleeves” is just long enough for me to cover up my unzipped pants when I’ve eaten too much husker party food.

He is my friend ~ and this weekend even though it will be hot, I will bring him with me.  Together we will watch Nebraska kick-off a new season.  Together we will get chills when the tunnel walk begins.  Together will we reminisce about old times.

Yes.  I made Kyle snap a picture of me in my favorite sweatshirt.  Clearly I’m concerned about vanity in this shot.

You may have also noticed a bread bowl shaped as a football in the feature photo.  I found this gem last year at Sun-mart in Kearney.  I do hope they will make them again this year.  Give Barb in the bakery department a call if you’d like her to make them for you.

Or, you can give it a shot.  I think you just take rye bread and shape it into a football.  Then add a few pieces of a different bread dough on top to form the laces.  Then bake. Cut off the top and add your favorite dip to the bowl.

I’ll give it a shot later in the season and let you know how it goes!

Yeah!  Go Huskers!

P.S.  We just happened to be giving away two husker tickets next week!  Make sure you check back!

P.P.S. Do I dress my girls in all that crazy husker gear?  Why yes.  Yes I do.  Here’s a shot from a couple years ago.  Clearly I have no shame.
