There’s nothing better than curling up under a blanket on a snowy day with a mug of hot chocolate. Oh wait! Yes, there is! Curling up under a blanket on a snowy day with a mug of boozy hot chocolate!
This hot cocoa is absolutely delicious, and you’ll get a nice little buzz, which makes getting through the holidays just a little bit easier.
To make this hot chocolate a bit healthier, I used dark chocolate and cocoa powder, which contain healthy antioxidants. Using actual dark chocolate makes this drink so rich and creamy. It’s way better than any hot cocoa packet!
Hot cocoa packets contain ingredients like artificial flavors, hydrogenated oils, refined sugar, and they have no nutritional value. Definitely go for the real chocolate!
I used a sweetened vanilla almond milk. If you use unsweetened almond milk or regular cow’s milk, add some natural sweetener like honey, maple syrup or stevia.
I also used a candy cane to make my hot chocolate pepperminty, but you can also use a few drops of natural peppermint extract to reduce the sugar.
Spiked Peppermint Hot Chocolate
1 1/2 cups almond milk
1 oz. dark chocolate, broken into pieces
1 tbsp. cocoa powder
1 candy cane or a few drops of peppermint oil
1 shot bourbon, dark rum or spiced liqueur (I used B&B Liqueur – it’s a blend of benedictine liqueur and brandy)
Pour almond milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the dark chocolate. Stir frequently while the chocolate melts.
Add cocoa powder and stir until incorporated.
Bring to a low simmer for just a few seconds. Remove from heat and pour into a mug. Add booze and stir with a candy cane (or add peppermint extract and stir).
Makes 1 large serving
Enjoy!
Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
