Her Favorite Fall Festival

I love small towns.  I grew up in a town of about 300.  One of my favorite parts were the wonderful festivals.  Everyone comes together to have a really great time.  There’s something for everyone.

Most festivals are in the summer (before Labor Day or school) in Nebraska.  Not this one.  A “Fall” Festival!!

Wellfleet Fall Festival

There’s a campfire cookoff, sheep chip bingo, a wild west show, parade…. (I could go on and on.  The full schedule is below.)

This looks like SO much fun!

After the parade is a good, old fashioned wild west show.

And I hear they have the best BBQ sandwich for miles around.  Here’s how they do it:

They dig the pit early in the week.  The friday before the event they light a fire in the pit using wood at 5:30 am and burn wood all day long to get hot, hot coals.  They monitor the pit, stir it to keep it going and to ensure it get’s really hot.  They then start prepping the pit using tin and gunny sacks.  The beef roasts are seasoned and double wrapped in tin foil.  the meat goes in the pit around 8pm.  They cover it with more tin and gunny sacks and bury it with dirt.  It cooks all night long in the pit and is dug out and taken off around 10:30 a.m. on saturday.  They unwrap it and slice it and prepare it to be served as part of the Free BBQ.

All this work and they give the sandwich away for FREE!!!

Here's a shot of the fire pit. I need to taste one of these!!

Don’t you want to hop in your car and head over there tomorrow?  You can!  Here’s their website and facebook page.  Below is their schedule of events.
