Her List: What to Buy in October

Trick or treat? More like hide and seek.
October may be a month to keep your wallet in your pocket. It sits right between back-to-school sales and holiday shopping. The BEST stuff to buy right now might be what’s being harvested out of local gardens and fields. Usually I put “What’s in Season” at the bottom of this list, but I’ve moved it to the stop this month.
What’s in Season (Don’t forget about wines, pies, breads and such made from these fruits or veggies at your local market):
- Apples
- Beets
- Brussels sprouts
- Cranberries
- Dates
- Figs
- Grapes
- Lettuce (leaf and head)
- Okra
- Oranges
- Pears
- Peppers
- Pumpkins
- Raspberries
- Shallots
- Turnips
- Winter squash
Here’s a list of major Nebraska Farmer’s Markets. But check your city’s calendar for a market close to you.
Now for the Top 5 (other) Things to Buy in October
1. Denim
This is where it is good to be between the holidays and back-t0-school. Those stores that stocked up for school sales now want to off-load all the leftovers. They’ll be marking down in many spots.
2. Underwear
This seems to be a rather new trend. Some of the bigger retail stores have been knocking down prices on bras and panties in October. One site says last year they found panties as low as $2 and bras as low as $5 shipped at Kohl’s. These were mainly online prices. We may see that again this year.

3. Garden Supplies
If you can store it, it may be a good deal. A lot of the stuff going on sale may be a better deal if we lived in warmer climates. But think about bulbs, rakes, hoses and other stuff you can use in your garden after it thaws.
4. Patio Furniture
These babies are ready to sell! Sure, they may be super picked over. But you’re gonna get the best prices out there – especially for the floor models. Stores wanna get rid of those patio sets that are left so they can blow up Santas, light up Christmas trees and roll out decorations.
5. Big Appliances
Generally, October is a pretty good time to buy big appliances if you need them. Fridges, dishwashers and stoves could be marked down. Also, look for floor models with a ding or two for the best possible deal.

*WAIT TO BUY TOYS TO SAVE MONEY*
I like to get started early, but all the money sites I watch say to wait for December deals to gather up those toys for Christmas. Sometimes time is worth more than money. And there is something to be said for piece of mind when it comes to having your shopping done. You be the judge.

Great tips – thank you!!
