Expecting your teenage son to follow a skin care regimen is as unrealistic as assuming your 8 year old is brushing his teeth twice a day without being asked. It’s just not going to happen without serious nagging and supervision. Boys are weird and they actually don’t know how to use cleansers, lotions and potions. YOU have to teach him step by step.

With football season in full swing, I noticed my son’s skin was starting to worsen. It was time for an intervention. Fall Ball is approaching and because his date is the cutest girl in the 9th grade, I was hoping he would have some extra motivation. 🙂

I’ve spent the last two weeks tending to his skin with the same diligence of a new mom treating diaper rash. And the effort has paid off. Here’s how we did it using Rx Skin Therapy products*.

Step 1:

Place the bottle of Acne Wash ($30) in his shower. Remind him to wash his face (and back) with just one pump every time he showers. For my son this means after football practice and again in the morning before school.

Step 2:

After he showers, grab him by the ear and drag him back into the bathroom. Using the dropper, place a pea-sized drop of Skin Firming Serum ($58) on the back of his hand. Teach him how to rub it into his T-zone or wherever he has blemishes. I know it’s shocking but he won’t know where to find his T-zone.

Mom Tip #1 – This is an anti-aging product so you can use this as well! It is liquid gold. Do not let him waste it. Not only will it tighten your son’s pores which will prevent clogging, blackheads and blemishes but it will also tighten and firm your mom skin. Once you’ve used the product you won’t be able to live without it.

Step 3:

After the Skin Firming Serum dries slightly, have him use a pea-sized amount of Clarifying Cream ($60) on his blemishes. Too much of this product will dry out his skin so only use it where needed.

Mom Tip #2 – Spread it on his back acne while he is distracted.

Step 4 night time only:

Use the Clarifying Facial Masque ($40) as an overnight spot treatment. Obviously he will only allow you to do this before he goes to bed. He will hate it. He will think it burns because teenage boys are wimps. Ignore him because it works. Once in a while I am able to convince my son to use this product as a facial masque as directed on the jar.  This is rare and he finds it “painful.”  Wimp. This is done prior to Step 2.

Mom Tip #3 – I know it is tempting but do not pick his zits. He will not like it, especially if you come at him with a sharp pointy tool. This will only result in your son running out of the bathroom without finishing the facial.

Mom Tip #4 – Don’t actually call it a facial.

If you aren’t looking to invest in new products, you can follow this regimen with any acne line on the market. The key to success is YOU. Your boy will not do this alone. Let the battle begin!

  • My daughter is reaching that age and is breaking out mostly on her forehead. I’m trying to get her to start a skin care regimen, but at age 9, it’s not the first thing on her mind. I’d really love for her to try this!

  • I know exactly what you are going through!! My son and I go round and round getting his face cleaned every morning and night. He has really started breaking out from wearing his football helmet and he has school pictures this week so we have been spending quality time in the bathroom tryining to get his face cleared up for pics!!

  • Rochelle, you are smart to start her on a regime at a young age. You can’t just hand them a bottle of acne cleanser and cream and tell them to go use it. Just like learning to brush their teeth, we do it for them until they are old enough to do it themselves. For a nine year old, take baby steps. Maybe just the cream or spot treatment after she takes a bath and washed in the shower. However, remind her not to scrub her face if it is broken out. Surely it is easier with girls. Yes? Someone correct me if I am wrong. Boys just don’t seem to care if they walk around with bad skin.

  • I would love to try these products! I’m 23 years old and will be turning 24 in March, which is also when I will be getting married…but…i still have breakouts often, mostly on my chin and by my ears/upper cheek bone area. It would be nice to finally find a skin care system that works great without having to break the bank so my skin is looking good for our big day(especially with all the money we are putting into our wedding-wedding photos lol) 🙂

    • Ashley, U-Save offers free skin consultations using their Derma-View machine. I actually do the consultations. It takes only about 10 minutes. It’s a great way to determine which products you need for your skin type. After viewing my own skin in the machine, I realized I had spent years using the wrong products. If you want to set up an appointment, send me an email zumbawithsanae@charter.net. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

  • I would love for my son to try this. He will be 15 in December but his face has been breaking out in acne and his back too. I’m hoping if he uses something that he knows works for someone who he knows that he will be more apt to use it.

    • I purchased acne products for my son over a year ago. I left it in his bathroom and said “use it”. It wasn’t until months later when I just happened to be standing beside him while he was washing his face that I realized he really didn’t know how to use the products. I literally had to walk him through it step by step. This helped but he still wasn’t consistent. His skin hasn’t improved until now with me literally dragging him into the bathroom. But now that he is seeing results, he is more willing. Good luck!!

  • I would also like to try these products for myself and my teenage son. I am 56 years old and am still breaking out. They leave spots on my face that last a long time. My teenage son is also in football and he has been having problems with his skin also. His grandmother bought him the proactive stuff this summer and I think it worked a little bit but it hasn’t done the trick. It would be nice to try something that somebody locally has used and recommends. Thank you.

  • Whether I win or not … I am going to try this!! I wondered if my son’s football helmet was making the problem worse …. seeing this and others comments makes me reassured! I heard that maybe milk can also make acne worse?? I sure hope it is a myth because water and milk is all he drinks.

  • Thank you Sanae for introducing me to this product! I’m one who tries it all and everything. I’m fighting the age factor, but along with age comes hormones. And with hormones I’m getting breakouts. You told me about the clarifying mask and i thought it was probably like everything else but I’d give it a try. This is hands down the best product I have used for acne ! Sometimes I spot treat and actually get over night results. But always cleared up
Acne within a few days at most. I’d love to see The other ” clarifying products” I can use. I’ll text u. Or if there’s a website I can view let me know. Thx!

  • I could definitely use a prodUct like this! I have tried everything from prescription to OTC. At 28 I still feel like I did when I was 12 because I cannot get rid of my acne!

  • Hi! I am a new mom(again!)and would love to spoil myself! I also have a almost 12 year old that I would like to start teaching healthy face habits too 🙂 thanks!!!

  • Great testimonial Steph!! And thank you for all your comments. I suffered from acne while in high school so that is probably why I am chasing my son around the house with zit cream!!! 🙂

Who knew we would be getting zits AND turning grey all at the same time!! I use the acne products along with the anti-aging products. This is the first anti-aging product line I’ve tried that actually helps blemish skin as well.

If anyone wants to do a private skin consultation, please let me know. It’s free and it only takes a few minutes. (Ask Leslie! I made her come in for an upcoming post and it was painless, huh Leslie??) No pressure to buy anything but it is helpful to see your skin in the “magic mirror”. Bring your teen along with you. Sometimes when they can actually see their clogged pores and blemishes under the black light, they are more willing to take care of their skin. AND if they see the sun damage on mom, they will fully appreciate the importance of using sun screen!!! Double bonus!! 🙂

  • Congratulations Abbey! Your free jar of Clarifying Facial Masque will be waiting for you at U-Save Pharmacy in Kearney anytime after Tuesday of this week! Enjoy!
