We are at a lull in our garden process. At this point we are just waiting for more tomatoes to turn so we can start canning. We had tons of extra cherry tomatoes so Brent took some over to our sweet neighbor Helen.
While he was over there she asked him to take a few apples from her tree.
We were so excited! We love fresh fruit, especially apples. We made the trek next door and started picking. Oh man there are so many! She was so grateful for us to get them off her hands and we were so grateful to get some yummy fruit! They sure were good.
Before we left she “demanded” we come back for more! We really couldn’t disappoint her, she is just the nicest lady, so we will gladly be back for more!!
We picked 3 large buckets of apples. The first thing we did was dehydrate them leaving some plain and some with cinnamon & sugar. This is so easy to do and they last a long time this way.
Who needs scented candles? Just dehydrate cinnamon sugar apples for the same scent!
We also made a flat apple pie, from the Pioneer Women cookbook. I love this recipe as it is so easy.
Oh man so yummy! When it starts to ooze out of the sides you know it’s done…or maybe a little too done. Either way it was tasty!
I actually used my normal pie crust recipe, her filling and tips to form the crust. I just love this way of eating a pie. Instead of using a pie plate you use a cookie sheet and fold over the sides of the crust, so easy!!
It is one of the best fillings I have ever had. Minus the fact that she doesn’t use cinnamon…seriously no cinnamon? I am a little disappointed PW, but I will forgive you because you are awesome!! She is seriously my role model, I hope when I grow up I am just like her. 🙂
Anyone watched her show on Food Network? I am a little behind but I have them recording. My mother-in-law and I talk about it so much that my father-in-law even started watching it. Of the episodes he has watched he noticed PW’s father-in-law had a key role of saying “mmm..yum”. So he now goes around saying that, then claims he is practicing his lines, thinking someday I will be famous and have my own show. Ha! Keep Dreaming.
What do you like to make with apples? I need more ideas…any suggestions?
One last note. Still not sure on the status of my pumpkin plants but we should at least get a few, for sure these two! Thanks for all your tips last week. We’ll keep you posted!
YAY! Baby Pumpkins!
Already turning orange…SERIOUSLY!!
