Wow!! How many times have you heard already: “Put that on my Christmas List!” “I hope Santa brings me . . .” “I really really want . . ..”
Of course we feed this frenzy by watching all those commercials, looking at all the ads that come in the mail – – -or just going into ANY store. Yes, Christmas, the buying season is in full swing.
Believe me, I can see it in myself. Amazon came out with this Black Friday Deals Countdown. (Notice how I added the link for you??!!) Once you log into it, I dare you not to purchase something.
But I am a teacher. I talk to kiddos everyday. Right now we are talking about your Top 10 things to be Thankful For. Can you believe Skylander and Minecraft were mentioned?? I had to ask – really?? Your Top Ten? It only takes a moment for them to reconsider, most of the time.
But are we the ones programming them to want?
When I talk to the students about their favorite times with family, you might be surprised to hear what I hear. Now I am not selling any thing specific, I’m just asking you to take a moment, like I asked the kiddos.
What is mentioned over and over again – -Board Games. These modern day plugged in kiddos love to sit down with their families and friends and play a Board Game. I mean the one on the table or floor, not the game online.
They love that sharing with an adult. They love the talking and the challenges. They love spending real time with real people. HMMMMmmmm – even in 2014!
So as we engulf ourselves in the preparations, or even the everyday – -got to get this done list. We need to take a moment.
Maybe, instead of asking your favorite child what they WANT – – – -we should begin asking what activity would you like to do? You might just find out what kids REALLY want.
