Today, one of my students (pictured) sat talking to another across the room. At one point, this student laid her hand on mine and just sat like this for nearly 30 minutes while we all talked. I had to snap a pic.⁣
⁣
We didn't do math because it was clear my three sweethearts in the room wanted and needed to talk. We talked relationships, rules, goals, makeup, nails, high school, futures, fears, and everything in between and beyond.⁣
⁣
These moments make the hard ones easier to forget; when students feel safe and loved . . . they learn. Simple as that.⁣
⁣
Thank you, God, for leading my heart back to public education where I belong.⁣
⁣

One day, I know I won’t have my kids all under my roof. They will have children of their own, and my heart will break not to have all my family together.⁣
⁣
But my kids can thank the kindness and generosity of their grandmother when I tell them to enjoy this special day with their own families. I want them to be able to create the memories that I always carry around in my heart.⁣

Sometimes a mom’s love looks like toilet paper and paper towel.⁣
⁣
Ever since I was in college, my mom has never left without stocking me up on toilet paper and paper towel.⁣
⁣
She stocked up my dorm room when she dropped me off for my very first semester, leaving a pack of Charmin and Bounty along with a piece of her heart.⁣
⁣
The next year she stocked up the dinghy-but-cozy house off campus that I shared with three friends and we affectionately nicknamed “The Cape.” Our poor college kid budgets were tight and we were so grateful to have “the good toilet paper."⁣
⁣
She stocked up the first house I moved into in Washington, D.C., where I lived with two guys I’d never met and had to climb up a metal winding staircase to get to my room.⁣
⁣
She stocked up the two-bedroom, one-bath apartment my boyfriend and I moved into together after only six months of dating. ⁣
⁣
She stocked up our first house, which had a teeny storage closet and was furnished with cheap couches from Bob’s Discount Furniture.⁣
⁣
And she had packed that teeny storage closet full when I waved goodbye to her with tears in my eyes after she came to help me with her very first grandchild.⁣
⁣
It didn’t matter if we already had some. She always went out and bought more. An extra pack of toilet paper, an extra pack of paper towels. “You can never have too much,” she would say.⁣
⁣
Every time she came to see me. And even when I could afford to buy it myself. Since I became an adult and moved out on my own, my mom has never left without stocking me up on paper towel and toilet paper.⁣
⁣
I think it’s a way she could keep taking care of me, even as I started having to learn to take care of myself.⁣
⁣
Because she couldn’t spare me the heartbreak I suffered or the loneliness of finding my way in the world or the stress of a grueling job or the worry of new motherhood.⁣
⁣
She couldn’t take away the pain and embarrassment of tough lessons.⁣
⁣
But she could make my life a little softer.⁣
⁣
A little easier. A little more affordable. A little better.⁣
⁣
She could buy me toilet paper and paper towel.⁣
⁣
And to me, that will always look like love.⁣
⁣
