She will cry a lot but she will never let you see those tears. She sees them as a sign of weakness. She will hide from you at first; be patient. Let her know you won’t leave her, that you will stay, even on the bad days. Especially on the bad days. She won’t be able to accept your love for she feels unworthy of it. She feels she is too broken and damaged to be truly loved by someone.⁣

When she finally lets you in, you will finally see the pain, the darkness, the deep longing she has just to be held and comforted.⁣

“How could she let herself go like that?”⁣

⁣“Wow, she really let herself go.”⁣
⁣⁣
I’ve heard people say these words with a slow shake of their heads.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I hear this phrase often when a woman gains weight. When her usually slender frame gains another layer. When she takes up more space than she used to. When she doesn’t have the time to dress up and the two craps to give about calorie counting, the scale, ANY OF IT.⁣
⁣⁣
But, you know what I think?⁣
⁣
⁣She didn’t let herself go. In fact, she’s done quite the opposite. She’s letting herself live.⁣
⁣⁣
She’s too busy making memories with her kids, sharing chicken fingers, and comforting their fragile hearts to put makeup on and get her hair colored every time she sees a gray.⁣
⁣⁣
She’s too busy living and enjoying to put that useless pressure on herself. So instead, she's accepted the cellulite on the back of her thighs, stomach sprinkled with stretch marks and extra skin as a gift from her babies. They’re a representation of her strength as a mom.⁣
⁣
⁣So really:⁣
⁣⁣
She’s let herself go of worrying about appearances.⁣
⁣
⁣She’s let herself go of the traditions she was raised with but never felt at home.⁣
⁣⁣
And she’s finally free of societal constraints.⁣
⁣⁣
So, the next time you hear “she let herself go,” look past her messy bun, and her mesh shorts, to her happy heart—and know that she’s free.⁣

⁣And smile for her because you know she’s never looked better, and felt more 𝘩𝘦𝘳.⁣

Twelve years have passed since I snapped this pict

Twelve years have passed since I snapped this picture.⁣
⁣
It will be a forever favorite. Each year when it pops up in my Facebook Memories, I revisit that summer day.⁣
⁣
Twelve years, feels like a lifetime ago and like yesterday. Motherhood distorts time.⁣
⁣
Back then, that boy, my baby boy, was little and wanted to do whatever dad was doing.⁣
⁣
In some respects that didn’t last long, not as long as I thought it would anyway.⁣
⁣
These days they have different interests, tastes, and temperaments.⁣
⁣
That boy is now less than a year away from driving a real car and I hope that hot rods are one of the ties that bind these two together.⁣
⁣
Their taste in cars is different, but their appreciation for all things motorized is a common ground.⁣
⁣
Dad will likely need to buy some metric tools and learn some new technology and Junior will need to learn how to get his hands dirty.⁣
⁣
I envision them sometimes, that boy a man, asking his dad for help. Maybe because he needs it and maybe as a means to spend time together.⁣
⁣
For some families, the commonality is fishing or camping, for my husband and his dad, sports is the common language. In our house, it’s cars.⁣
⁣
Shared hobbies are like glue; they help hold us together. They start conversations and give us a reason to spend time together. Sometimes we need a spark to get started.⁣
⁣
Someday, that old Chevy will be passed on to our son. It isn’t his style now, it may still not be when it becomes his. But I hope when he gets behind the wheel, it feels like home.⁣
⁣
I hope it always takes him on a trip down a lane filled with good memories. I hope he thinks of his mom and dad and simple days.⁣
⁣
What a ride this life is . . .⁣
