To the Postpartum Mama,⁣
⁣
How are you feeling?⁣
You just accomplished one of the most strenuous, physically and mentally demanding things a human being can do.⁣
Your body just grew and birthed a whole person.⁣
You did that.⁣
I did, too.⁣
It’s just incredible, isn’t it?⁣
⁣
I know it hurts.⁣
You’re probably exhausted in ways you didn’t realize were possible, right?⁣
You’re probably wondering how you can feel so fulfilled and full at the exact same time you feel empty and barren.⁣
Don’t worry, mama.⁣
I’ve been there, too.⁣
⁣
Your body is sore and tender.⁣
Recovering from months and months of changes that were painful, glorious, unfamiliar and miraculous.⁣
Your thoughts a daze.⁣
Foggy and fuzzy at times, and others racing and intrusive.⁣
Sometimes even scary.⁣
You might find yourself wondering if this is all normal, if this is how it’s supposed to be.⁣
I did, too.⁣
⁣
And the truth is, honestly,⁣
there is no such thing as normal after you give birth.⁣
We all have a different story.⁣
A different journey.⁣
We can read all the books, do all the googling, but nobody ever really prepares you for what to expect after you’re expecting, do they?⁣
⁣
I can’t give you all the answers, mama.⁣
I can’t tell you what’s best because I am not you.⁣
But I can give you this advice-⁣
Trust your instincts, and listen to your body and your mind.⁣
If what they’re telling you doesn’t feel right, ask for help. And don’t stop asking until you find it.⁣
Because there is help.⁣
And you don’t need to feel ashamed for seeking it out.⁣
I needed it, too.⁣
⁣
How are you feeling, mama?⁣
No, really.⁣
Your body just grew and birthed a whole person.⁣
It’s just incredible, isn’t it?⁣
And as much as that little person now matters more than anything else in the entire world, don’t forget,⁣
you do too.⁣
⁣

It matters if you are real.⁣

It matters how you love them with your whole heart and show affection.⁣
⁣
It matters how you apologize and invite vulnerability to the table.⁣
⁣
It matters how you encourage big dreams and tell them the sky is the limit.⁣
⁣
It matters if you give them a safe place to land.⁣
⁣
It matters if you are their biggest advocate and loudest cheerleader.⁣
⁣
It matters if you teach them kindness by demonstrating it.⁣
⁣
It matters if you wipe their tears away and put a bandaid on their scraped-up knee.⁣
⁣
This parenting thing isn’t something to take lightly.⁣
⁣
It’s a big job.⁣
⁣
The biggest of them all.⁣
⁣
But it’s one where we will keep showing up,⁣
keep learning,⁣
keep apologizing,⁣
keep growing,⁣
and keep offering every ounce of our hearts to see their little hearts soar.⁣
⁣

Dear Kids,⁣
⁣
Let’s talk about Valentine’s Day.⁣
⁣
Here’s the deal. Chocolate is tasty. I could eat an entire heart shaped box. Even the weird ones.⁣
⁣
And flowers? Who doesn’t love flowers? They are beautiful and can cheer up any cold winter day.⁣
⁣
My heart melts when your dad writes me a love letter. Some of his best words can rival any romantic movie. Even The Notebook.⁣
⁣
But know what’s even better than that? Better than cards and bouquets and gifts and fancy words?⁣
⁣
A coffee pot filled with water, because he knows I hate filling it myself.⁣
Walking downstairs to find laundry folded because your dad did it for us.⁣
A tank full of gas, so I don’t have to fill my car in the cold.⁣
Watching him make you laugh.⁣
How he patiently combs your brother’s hair.⁣
⁣
And it’s not just the little things he does for me, for us. It’s what he does for others.⁣
⁣
How he treats his mom.⁣
How he’ll volunteer at church and in the community.⁣
How friends call him for advice or just a listening ear.⁣
How he’s appreciated at work.⁣
⁣
I knew on the first day we met that this guy was different from the rest.⁣
⁣
The romance was fun, yes (and he’s just so cute) but there was more to it than that.⁣
⁣
He respects me.⁣
⁣
And I respect him.⁣
⁣
That’s love. That’s what I want so desperately for each of you.⁣
⁣
I pray you don’t get caught up with someone who thinks only about the big stuff and forgets the small moments.⁣
⁣
Don’t get me wrong, chocolate is delicious. Notes are thoughtful. Flowers are beautiful. I want those things for you as well.⁣
⁣
But the normal, comfortable, everyday respect? Gosh, that’s love. That’s where the good stuff lives. That’s what lasts a lifetime. ❤⁣
