Dear Kids,⁣
⁣
Let’s talk about Valentine’s Day.⁣
⁣
Here’s the deal. Chocolate is tasty. I could eat an entire heart shaped box. Even the weird ones.⁣
⁣
And flowers? Who doesn’t love flowers? They are beautiful and can cheer up any cold winter day.⁣
⁣
My heart melts when your dad writes me a love letter. Some of his best words can rival any romantic movie. Even The Notebook.⁣
⁣
But know what’s even better than that? Better than cards and bouquets and gifts and fancy words?⁣
⁣
A coffee pot filled with water, because he knows I hate filling it myself.⁣
Walking downstairs to find laundry folded because your dad did it for us.⁣
A tank full of gas, so I don’t have to fill my car in the cold.⁣
Watching him make you laugh.⁣
How he patiently combs your brother’s hair.⁣
⁣
And it’s not just the little things he does for me, for us. It’s what he does for others.⁣
⁣
How he treats his mom.⁣
How he’ll volunteer at church and in the community.⁣
How friends call him for advice or just a listening ear.⁣
How he’s appreciated at work.⁣
⁣
I knew on the first day we met that this guy was different from the rest.⁣
⁣
The romance was fun, yes (and he’s just so cute) but there was more to it than that.⁣
⁣
He respects me.⁣
⁣
And I respect him.⁣
⁣
That’s love. That’s what I want so desperately for each of you.⁣
⁣
I pray you don’t get caught up with someone who thinks only about the big stuff and forgets the small moments.⁣
⁣
Don’t get me wrong, chocolate is delicious. Notes are thoughtful. Flowers are beautiful. I want those things for you as well.⁣
⁣
But the normal, comfortable, everyday respect? Gosh, that’s love. That’s where the good stuff lives. That’s what lasts a lifetime. ❤⁣

I’m sorry I get so burned out by it all and then can’t give you the attention you need—because you need that attention. You need to be seen, and sometimes I feel like I fail to give you that because I am so drained from it all.⁣

But know this, my hard child, I will never stop fighting for you.⁣

She left me a piece of toast.⁣ ⁣ It was cold,

She left me a piece of toast.⁣
⁣
It was cold, and it had been sitting there for an hour or so, but she left it for me anyway.⁣
⁣
There was no note attached, we hadn’t talked about it either.⁣
⁣
But it was for me. I knew it. Right there, in the middle of the counter. Waiting for me.⁣
⁣
My girl is 14. She’ll be 15 this summer.⁣
⁣
“It goes by in a blink,” they say. Faster than a blink once they hit the teenage years—I’m certain.⁣
⁣
Most mornings, she and her sister make their own breakfast as I focus on their younger brother.⁣
⁣
Routine is usually chaotic.⁣
⁣
“Where are my shoes?”⁣
⁣
“I’m too tired for school.”⁣
⁣
“Don’t forget your homework!”⁣
⁣
I leave first with our son.⁣
⁣
"Love you, have a great day” I shout as we walk out the door.⁣
⁣
My husband and our girls leave after me.⁣
⁣
I’m not sure what happens between 7:40-7:50 before they hit the road for middle school drop-off, but I know what happened on this day.⁣
⁣
My teen left me a piece of toast.⁣
⁣
When I got home from drop-off and a quick coffee run, I saw it waiting for me.⁣
⁣
I know what you’re thinking—what’s so special about cold toast?⁣
⁣
I get it. I might think that too.⁣
⁣
But what I saw that morning, was a thoughtful, kind gesture from my 14-year-old girl.⁣
⁣
She knew I liked toast. Especially this kind, with Nutella spread on top.⁣
⁣
She also knew I don’t usually eat right away in the mornings. I prefer coffee first.⁣
⁣
Teens get a bad rap. I get it. There’s a lot of emotion involved and a lot of sass. They are growing and learning and sometimes (OK, often) it feels like they can be self-absorbed.⁣
⁣
It’s hard and exhausting and emotionally difficult to raise teens. Period.⁣
⁣
That’s all part of it, I suppose.⁣
⁣
But I don’t think they get enough credit.⁣
⁣
They are thoughtful. They are kind.⁣
⁣
They are ambitious, brilliant, and hard-working, and they care about people.⁣
⁣
Sometimes, we just have to look a little harder.⁣
⁣
I saw it that morning in a cold piece of toast, and I made sure to thank her.⁣
⁣
“Thanks for the toast,” I told her in a text. I added a heart emoji to stay hip.⁣
⁣
“I knew you’d like it,” she said.⁣
⁣
More than you know, my girl. More than you know.⁣
⁣
