Yes, I’m an emotional wreck only 8 days postpartum. But you guys! This speech. Try not to tear up with this one.
This is the high school coach in our “view” in Kearney, Nebraska. The guys fought hard this year but lost last night in the semi-final rounds at the state high school basketball tournament.
It was a heartbreaker.
The lessons these guys will learn from this loss will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Watch and get ready to grab some tissues.
Congratulations to the Kearney High School Boy’s Basketball Team and to the entire coaching staff for an incredible season. Here’s a few quotes from Coach Beranek following the loss.
“I’ve been this close my entire life. And I’ll be dog gone if I’m going to stop trying to get over this stinkin’ hump. And I thank God every day that he gives me guys like you to be able to talk to… and you guys listen to me. It is such a blessing. And the reason I’m telling you that is not to tell you about what I’ve done. It’s to tell you about what you’re going to do. When you get smacked in the mouth are you going to sit there and sulk? Or are you going to be solution based. Are you going to find a way? Are you going to never stop trying to be the best you can be?
“That’s what it’s about. That’s what life is about. So it’s hard for me to sit here and be upset. What you guys did was out-fricking standing. Outstanding. Do not hang your heads. You guys learned a great valuable lesson for life. I’ve told you this before – when you lose – it’s OK if you learn from it.”
“I’ve been this close and I ain’t stoppin’ and neither should you. This is a road block. You got two choices. It can drive you to be better or you can sit here and sulk. I want guys in our program that get hungry.”
“Take the life lessons you learn from the game of basketball – take the life lessons you learned from today and apply them to your life and be the best human beings you can be. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to be a husband. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to be a father. You guys have got way better things to come. It stinks now – but it will get better. Apply these things to your life… and I have no doubt in my mind that you guys are going to be great people.”
