After being kicked out of high school, Valene worked various jobs in order to pay for her black Firebird, fake blonde hair, and fake red fingernails. Valene went from jail to college—in that order. She has been a barista, school counselor, hospice social worker, nonprofit director, psychotherapist, and writer. She taught English in South Korea and backpacked for a year in Thailand. Working and teaching abroad, she mastered the art of pilgrimage. Travel and pathos also drew her to Third World places where she developed appreciation for the strength and spirituality of people's lives everywhere. Valene has fallen in love with life as an adventurer and writes to share what she learns along the way. She and her husband live in the Colorado Rockies with their two sons, two dogs, and a good amount of gear for every kind of outdoor adventure.
