I do it on purpose to distract my mind from the hard things.⁣

I add things I like to do, so I can avoid the things I don’t like to do.⁣
⁣
I add things to my plate.⁣
I volunteer for almost everything because it makes me happy to help others. It’s who I am.⁣

I stretch myself so thin, so that I don’t have to be left alone with my thoughts.⁣

If I consume my time with happy, I’m less overwhelmed with the sad.⁣

Eventually my plate is overflowing, and so are my dishes, my laundry, and my mind.⁣
⁣
I add things to my plate.⁣
My plate NEEDS to be emptied, cleaned, and dealt with.⁣
⁣
I add things to my plate…⁣
Until I can’t.⁣
⁣
I’ve come to learn that my plate may never be fully clean or empty. I just need it empty enough to fix the hard; not push it to the bottom of the plate.⁣

My preschooler was gone.⁣

I didn’t even get to say goodbye.⁣
⁣
But this new little boy was the love of my life. He brought me pictures from school and his bright eyes always scanned the soccer sidelines for my face. We built LEGOs together and had Nerf wars and nearly every five minutes he said, “Hey Mom, guess what??” I played with him and cheered for him and listened to his stories and taught him to ride a bike.⁣

It’s okay if it’s unconventional.⁣
⁣
Holidays can be overwhelming for anyone.⁣
⁣
And for people who get overstimulated easily, it can be a day filled with anxiety and isolation.⁣
⁣
As a parent of an autistic child, I’ve learned a lot over the past 11 years.⁣
⁣
And one thing that has become crystal clear is that we need to be willing to adapt, improvise, and do what’s best for our family.⁣
⁣
If he doesn’t want to get dressed up, it’s okay.⁣
⁣
Sweatpants and his favorite green shirt works well, too.⁣
⁣
If he doesn’t want the turkey or mashed potatoes, it’s okay.⁣
⁣
We bring food with us and let him eat what he likes.⁣
⁣
Sometimes he’d rather eat in a quiet room away from the crowd, it’s okay.⁣
⁣
I take our plates with us and we sit on the floor enjoying the quiet together.⁣
⁣
Years ago, we were invited to three different houses in one day but knew it would be too much for our son.⁣
⁣
We said no and planned different days and times to exchange gifts.⁣
⁣
And opening gifts?⁣
⁣
It wasn’t always a pleasant experience for him, so we allowed his siblings to help him.⁣
⁣
And you know what? He loved it!⁣
⁣
For years, I felt like we were failing.⁣
⁣
I felt that if we had to say no, or did things differently, people would get upset.⁣
⁣
That they would be hurt if we didn’t participate in every holiday event or family function.⁣
⁣
The mom guilt for our other two children missing out on things crushed my heart.⁣
⁣
It was such a roller coaster of worry and distress.⁣
⁣
But the truth is, none of those things matter.⁣
⁣
What food our son eats, what he wears, if he wants to be alone, or if he doesn’t want to open presents.⁣
⁣
It’s all trivial.⁣
⁣
What matters most is the memories you make as a family.⁣
⁣
To be surrounded by the ones you love.⁣
⁣
Because the people who love you, and accept your child for who they truly are, will make you feel welcome in their home.⁣
⁣
An unconventional holiday is not a bad thing.⁣
⁣
It’s a day filled with love, laughter, and acceptance.⁣
⁣
A day of embracing differences and finding joy in the small things.⁣
⁣
A day of making memories that will last a lifetime.⁣
⁣
And it’s a blessing to be here for it all.⁣
⁣

I’m rethinking my priorities this holiday season

I’m rethinking my priorities this holiday season. Yes, we want to give our children the world. The best gifts. The fun trips.⁣
⁣
But there’s no way to wrap up childhood with pretty paper and a bow.⁣
⁣
So, as we gather the wishlists, let’s remember what they’re really asking for—⁣
⁣
They want grownups who aren’t stressed out.⁣
⁣
They need to understand why we celebrate and see our gratitude.⁣
⁣
They need us to get rid of anger, criticism, and bitterness.⁣
⁣
They want family time to play games, watch a movie, or go for a walk.⁣
⁣
They need us to slow down, be present, shut the noise off.⁣
⁣
They want a seat at the table and be actively involved.⁣
⁣
They need some hope, joy to the world, and peace in our homes.⁣
⁣
And to know it’s okay to ask for help and to see us take breaks.⁣
⁣
They want us to display their handiwork like it’s a masterpiece.⁣
⁣
They need us to check on family and share what we’ve got.⁣
⁣
Because my children won’t get everything they’ve ever wanted, but they’ll know how much they’re loved. And they’ll know they had enough.⁣
⁣
I’m choosing to let go of all the things this world says to chase after.⁣
⁣
I’m more interested in giving my children good memories of a happy home this holiday season.⁣
⁣
