The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

Motherhood is all about the mundane moments. Really, life in general is full of mundane moments.

The mundane moments of making one batch of chocolate chip pancakes and another batch of plain pancakes, later coated with whipped cream and sprinkles. The breakfast of champions and sugar.

The mundane moments of packing lunch boxes, day after day. Attempting to pack something different, only to be told later they want the same sandwich and chip combination. But never, ever forget the dessert or sticky note.

The mundane moments of driving to school. Picking through songs ranging from worship music to Taylor Swift to some guy not really singing but actually screaming but it’s about God so it’s okay. Reminding the kids to be kind and respectful, and not to forget their things after school.

The mundane moments of cleaning, laundry, dishwashing, laundry, sports and activities, and then more laundry.

It can become an endless cycle of things to accomplish. A never-ending checklist. It can be hard to see the joy in those mundane moments. It can be hard to see God in those moments, especially when the quiet time with Him is all you want and need, but finding the time for that is few and far between.

Until the Lord speaks to you as you’re washing the dishes and listening to the kids fight and argue in the background about what to watch on TV. When He whispers a gentle “Jordan, you can worship me while washing the dishes.”

The Lord is in the mundane moments. We just have to choose to create the space for Him. We have to see the little blessings in each mundane moment. We get to praise Him for the dishes that need to be cleaned from the food we ate. We get to worship Him for the laundry that needs to be cleaned from the little people (and big) that are in our lives. We get to thank him for cleaning a house that is filled with noise and toys. We get to be the voice in our kids’ lives, gently reminding them of what we are called to do and be to others. (And gently reminding them to please give that piece of paper in their backpacks to their teachers for the hundredth time.)

We get to find joy in the Lord and all He does in the mundane moments.

Use the mundane moments to experience His goodness and faithfulness in our lives. Thank Him for what He’s done and what He will continue to do.

Even (and especially) the never-ending laundry.

Dear Mama, Keep Doing the Things No One Sees

In: Motherhood

I sat on the edge of the tub, the toddler in her diaper clinging to me for dear life, while the older kids ran wild in the living room. The lingering smell of vomit on my clothes filled my nose and mixed with the smell of the strawberry bubble bath I was running. I stared down at the wreckage of blankets, towels, and old clothes that had been the victims of dinner making an encore appearance. I plopped the little one in the bath and wiped my greasy hair out of my eyes and let out a big sigh. We...

Can I Really Praise You in Everything, Lord?

Mother tying child's shoe

I descended the stairs, immediately irritated by what was awaiting me with each scream originating from my 15-year-old son. Great, I muttered as the uninvited stench rose to greet my nose. Luke, my son with profound special needs, required yet another diaper change—a chore that was becoming increasingly able to grate my very last nerve over the past few weeks as his father recovered from shoulder surgery—a recovery period that did not allow for diaper changes. I opened the door slightly and held my breath. The third of the day so far. My least favorite job in the whole world....

Once Upon a Time We Wished For This Life We Share www.herviewfromhome.com

Do you remember our life before we had children? The years of guilt-free spontaneity soon overcome by never-ending laundry and temper tantrums. It’s hard to draw our minds back to where it all began, but it was then, in our previous lives, where we actually wished for all of this. As we begin our adult lives, venturing into careers and making plans to create a family of our own, we don’t foresee the future or gear up for the realities of everyday life. Instead we dream. We dream big. We imagine what beginning our own little tribe will look like...
