The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

To the little siblings who are always there

The ones who tag along for every training and game.

The ones who make the car ride an adventure, packed with camping chairs, portable fans, gadgets, snacks, and anything else that might keep them entertained for hours on end.

The ones who befriend fellow team siblings, who play Mobile Legends or Roblox on the sidelines, then suddenly dash off for a game of tag around those white boundary lines outside the badminton court.

The ones who turn concession stands into money pits, always hungry, always asking for snacks, and always needing someone to accompany them to the bathroom. The ones who keep asking, “Is it done yet?”

The ones who seem barely interested…until their big sibling makes a huge play and suddenly, they’re cheering louder than anyone else in the crowd.

The ones who fall asleep waiting for the final match to end, wherever they can find a cozy spot.

The ones who proudly take on the role of “official photographer,” snapping blurry action shots and capturing memories in between bites of fried chicken and pancit canton.

We see you, little ones.

And when it’s your turn someday, when you’re the ones stepping onto the court, field, or stage, you’ll get all that same love, support, and cheering right back.

Until then, thanks for being the #1 sideline MVPs.

To the Siblings in the Stands, You’re the Real MVPs

younger siblings sitting on the bleachers

The most underrated fans in youth sports are the siblings in the stands. The youngest ones schlepped from game to game, morning and night, rain or shine. The ones who can’t always remember their best friends’ names but are known as Braden’s little sister and the quarterback’s pesky brother. None of whom own phones but intuitively know where to meet and who brings what to endure the hours spent in the bleachers. In some ways, these feral little children get the best parts of us parents. Sure, our firstborns had appropriate playdates in the park with organic carrots and reusable...

Hand on steering wheel

Growing up, I don’t remember a game or event without someone there cheering me on in the stands—and now I understand the sacrifice parents put in, for their kids. To a high school kid, it may seem unappreciated—but later? Later they’ll understand. And someday you’ll get that “thanks for being there” you deserve. So to the parents who are in the whirlwind of miles spent behind the wheel after long days of work or the missed activity they so wanted to be at but couldn’t—you’re seen. To the parents rushing from event to event, sometimes multiple ones in a day,...

Boy dribbling down basketball court, black-and-white photo

Last night was my sixth grader’s last basketball game of the season. He played with many of the same gang of boyhood friends he has known since kindergarten. This year, however, they were introduced to a traveling team, older players, and much stiffer competition than they had encountered in the past. They stood the test and played their little boy hearts out. I am proud of my son, his team, his coaches, and all the familiar faces we came to know in the Greenwood Laboratory School cheering section each week, sometimes two to three times in one week!  Here’s to...
