I don’t know about you, but finding a good pair of jeans has always felt like a process to me.
These are too tight. Those are too loose. They fit my thighs but bunch at my hips. The dreaded waist gap. Too short—high waters. Too long, and suddenly you can’t find your legs. Before you know it, you’re ordering your fourth pair and eyeing a fifth. A woman on a mission.
And still, as I stand there looking in the mirror at everything that doesn’t quite work, I just know there is a perfect pair out there for me. Somewhere. And if I keep looking, I’ll find them.
Lately, I’ve realized there are a lot of things in life that feel like this search.
The right job. The wrong jobs. A relationship that feels easy and true, and one that drains the life out of you. Even the small, everyday decisions we make can feel like trying things on, hoping something will finally fit.
We’ve all heard the pressure: nothing is perfect. Maybe you’re too picky. Voices telling you to just choose something, even when your heart is asking you to pause.
But I don’t think it’s wrong to know yourself well enough to recognize when something just doesn’t fit.
I don’t think it’s wrong to walk away, especially when new beginnings so often start with a redirection.
Because the truth is, I would try on a hundred pairs of jeans if it meant finding the one that feels just right. And maybe life works the same way. Maybe it’s okay to change your mind, to close a door, to try something different. It’s okay to go on your hundredth first date, to pivot your plans, to start over again.
You’re not failing. You’re learning.
Every “no” teaches you something about what you do want. Every almost-right brings you closer to what truly fits. There is something sacred about the middle of it all—the searching, the trying, the becoming. We need the middle.
So if you’re in a season where nothing seems to be working, where everything feels like it’s falling short or falling apart, maybe it’s not failure.
Maybe you’re just in the fitting room.
And you never know—one more try might be the perfect fit!
