I love full-circle moments, and in honor of Father’s Day, here’s a fun one involving my one-of-a-kind dad.
One of my dad’s absolute favorite books to read to me during my childhood was My Dad is Brilliant by Nick Butterworth. My dad always liked this book in particular because it showcased a dad doing cool things and being involved, and in a way, the book represented him. I loved it when he would read it to me because it confirmed what I already knew: dads could be “brilliant” and fun.
It was a rare book featuring a present dad during a time when dads weren’t typically as hands-on. And even though I was a little girl, I always knew I was extra lucky to have one of the involved dads.
The dad who braided my hair before school. The dad who worked at my school during lunch just so he could see me because at the time he worked afternoons. The dad who would bike ride with me for miles and always take me for a slushie after. The dad who tucked me in whenever he arrived home from work and always made sure to read books to me.
I’m still extra lucky to have one of the involved dads, and now I get to witness my kids having one of the involved papas as well. It is the sweetest thing seeing my dad with my kids, realizing now what I’ve known all along: my dad really is “brilliant.”
And when I walked into the local library recently and saw what I thought was the book we adored so long ago, I couldn’t help but grab it. But to my surprise, this one featured a mom and is called My Mom is Fantastic. It felt like a full-circle moment, so, of course, I bought it. And if my kids grow up to think I’m half as “fantastic” as I think my dad is “brilliant,” I’ll take it.
