For years we stayed home on Sunday mornings becaus For years we stayed home on Sunday mornings because, I said, “We can’t go to church."⁣
⁣
“He can’t sit through church."⁣
⁣
Did I say it out of experience?⁣
No.⁣
Out of fear?⁣
Yes.⁣
⁣
Fear held me back.⁣
I worried he wouldn’t sit, would be too noisy, would need to get up and move, so out of worry we stayed home.⁣
⁣
A little over a year ago, one kind Sunday school teacher changed my life.⁣
⁣
How? She invited us to come, she reminded us we were welcome, she asked us to join in.⁣
She made me brave enough to try.⁣
⁣
That’s what each of us needs sometimes, an invitation. A hand held out to say join us.⁣
The encouragement to try.⁣
⁣
My son has autism, some weeks he needs headphones to muffle the organ playing the hymns, some Sundays he raises his hand during the welcome to say “hi” to the preacher at the pulpit, some services he takes off his shoes and you hear the roar of a train coming from his device . . . and I’ve learned, nobody minds.⁣
⁣
Nobody minds that sometimes he giggles and flaps during the sermon, nobody minds that he lays in the foyer to greet members as they come in for Sunday service, or that he rides the elevator instead of taking the stairs.⁣
⁣
They don’t mind that our pew may be the “noisy one” some weeks, or that there is movement as he flaps from excitement.⁣
⁣
Nobody minds, because nobody else is completely silent, or still on Sunday mornings either, and they know he is doing his best each week. “A quiet church, is a dying church” is the quote I’ve clung to this past year. We can let it be our job to breathe life into the sanctuary.⁣
⁣
So if you stay home on Sunday morning “because they can’t” just like I did . . . this is your invitation to try, don’t waste another week sitting at home wishing you weren’t.⁣
⁣
Trust me, nobody minds a little extra noise in the church pews, they’re just happy you’re there.⁣

"She is me, each and every one of them, a woman wi "She is me, each and every one of them, a woman with a mother in Heaven.⁣
⁣
A mother who feels both so loving and so gone all at the same time. A mother who feels absent from everything and present in everything all at the same time. A mother in Heaven, unable to be present like the mothers of the friends I know. A mother who shows up in ways only I can understand and moments only I can feel."⁣

I’d be a better mom if . . .⁣ ⁣ I said yes m I’d be a better mom if . . .⁣
⁣
I said yes more.⁣
I said no more.⁣
I played with my kid more.⁣
I made my kid play independently more.⁣
I sent my kids to school.⁣
I kept my kids home.⁣
I let my kid cry it out.⁣
I let my kid sleep in my room.⁣
I cooked and cleaned more often.⁣
I pushed the to-do list to the side.⁣
I was able to breastfeed longer.⁣
I wasn’t so tired and stressed all the time.⁣
I always offered well-balanced meals.⁣
I let my kids choose what they want to eat.⁣
I didn’t worry so much.⁣
I worried a little more.⁣
I didn’t yell when I lose my patience.⁣
I didn’t shrug it off when my kid has a meltdown in the toy aisle.⁣
I planned more family activities.⁣
I relaxed and enjoyed family time at home more.⁣
I potty-trained my kid sooner.⁣
I let my kids hit milestones in their own time.⁣
I gave my kid a sibling.⁣
I gave my kid more one-on-one time.⁣
⁣
UGHHH.⁣
⁣
Sound familiar? We can be pretty hard on ourselves.⁣
⁣
I’ll tell you a secret though (one I have to remind myself of daily).⁣
⁣
Want to know how you would REALLY feel like a better mom?⁣
⁣
If you let those misconceptions go.⁣
If you were just YOU.⁣
If you accept the mom you are.⁣
If you stop comparing yourself to that mom over there.⁣
If you remember you were hand-picked to be your children’s mother.⁣
If you show up for your kids even so.⁣
If you love your kids with every ounce of your being.⁣
⁣
Now tell me, can you do those things, mama? Can you love the person you are as much as those little ones love you?⁣
⁣
You do that, and you’re the best mom you can be.⁣
⁣
No question about it.⁣
