Some call the holiday season the most wonderful time of the year, and in so many ways, it truly can be. But Christmas and all the busyness leading up to it can be stressful—and sometimes we forget that means it can be hard on the children, too. That’s why we love this post from Esther’s Childminding on extending a little extra grace to the little people we love so much. We think you will, too!

Be kind to me this Christmas—from a little person’s point of view:

You’ve probably let me eat more sugar than usual. I’m bound to have higher highs and lower lows.

In the holidays I’m out of routine. I can cope better with transitions when I know exactly what’s coming next, so please explain our plans for the day clearly to me.

The anticipation of Christmas can be pretty overwhelming and exhausting. Help me to rest by keeping to my normal bedtimes.

RELATED: The Holidays Are Hard For Kids, Too

Traveling at Christmas is stressful for all of us. When possible, be flexible about when we travel and check the traffic before we leave.

I have no idea about the value of money. If there’s no way I can have that giant LEGO set for Christmas, then please tell me well before Christmas morning.

I’ll have time to get over my disappointment, and I’ll learn to trust your honesty.

Grown-ups find preparing for Christmas stressful. I know you want it to be perfect for me so I’ll have memories I can cherish forever. But I see you getting stressed, sometimes even before you do. I pick up on it and reflect it like a mirror. Please slow down, notice me, talk to me, play with me. That’s what I’ll remember.

When I lose it—and I probably will at some point—please don’t make me ashamed of my feelings by shouting at me. I never set out to deliberately disappoint you and I didn’t try to ruin your Christmas. I’m really not that calculated. I’m just a little person whose brain deals with stress in different ways than yours.

Please try to understand me, from my point of view.

And when all else fails, wrap your arms around me and hold me so I feel the strength of your love.

6 Tips for Helping Children Sleep Well During the Holidays www.herviewfromhome.com

Parents know that during the holidays it’s not always easy to get our little ones to rest easy with “visions of sugar plums” dancing in their over-tired, sleep-deprived, celebration maxed-out heads. While adults can easily recover from an increased on-the-go holiday schedule, it’s not as simple for our children to wind down from holiday parties or vacation travel. However, with a little bit of pre-planning, we can prevent our kids from being tired and cranky during the “most wonderful time of the year.” Refer to routine. If you know you will be traveling during nighttime hours or that a party...

10 Sanity Saving Ways to Survive Christmas www.herviewfromhome.com

Endless toy commercials and Santas perched in every mall cheerfully, albeit loudly, announce the holiday season. Of course, moms never need these prompts to remember the dwindling days until Christmas. We have little, wide-eyed ones reminding us with a daily countdown. Since having children, I’ve strived to make every Christmas a picture-perfect memory-worthy moment. I bake and decorate with the fervor of Martha Stewart as I try to create a cozy yet elegant family Christmas rivaling a Norman Rockwell painting. Plans to Christmas tree farms, light shows, and cookie baking days are wedged between visits to Santa and forced photo...

‘Tis the Season

In: Faith

As we enter the season of Advent I can’t help but focus on how our thoughts and actions effect the world around us. We have really complicated our lives by adding all the wrong elements. Adding problems to our lives that are having an enormous impact on society and our world as a whole. Everywhere we turn we hear MORE, BIGGER, BETTER, FASTER, it seems as though we are never satisfied. Christmas has become so commercialized that it makes it difficult to teach our children the true meaning of the season of Advent because everywhere we look we are told...

“Mom, is Santa Real?” Here’s the Perfect Answer.

Letter to Santa explaining Christmas magic to a child

The holidays are fast approaching, and with them, a question that has haunted me each of the past few Christmases: Will this be the year my kids stop believing in Santa? If they ask, how do I tell them the truth? And how do I tell them the true meaning of Santa, and show them what holiday magic is really all about, without crushing their tender little hearts? My girls are there. Wondering. Pondering. Is Santa real? How can he really get to that many homes with gifts in one day? How does he make all those toys? And my...
