Nicole Vancura is a wife to Brady Vancura and mother to Aubrey and Ashtyn. In 2014, she was a normal, healthy 29-year-old. In April of that year, life changed.
Nicole lost weight and thought she felt a lump in her breast. She went to the doctor to have the lump checked. The doctor decided she needed to have a mammogram which then led to a needle biopsy.
The results left Nicole with a very aggressive form of breast cancer.
She met with an oncologist in Kearney, Nebraska as well as an oncologist and surgeon in Omaha and made the decision to have a double mastectomy in May of 2014. Nicole then had to do chemotherapy and underwent breast reconstruction surgery. She completed her last chemotherapy in October 2014 and her last non chemo treatment in June 2015.
In July, Nicole celebrated her 31st birthday and the end of treatment for cancer.
In September , Nicole began having abdominal pain along with some constant heartburn. Her oncologist ordered a CT scan and two days later, she heard the heartbreaking news:
The cancer had metastasized to her liver and was now considered stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer.
Nicole is now getting treatment at Cancer Centers of America in Chicago, IL. Due to the traveling for treatments every 3 weeks and having to take a chemo pill 2 weeks on 1 week off, Nicole is only able to work part time. This, on top of still paying for the treatments she received before, has been quite trying on the family.
Friends and family will hold a Soup Supper and Silent Auction for Nicole on January 16th 2016. This will be held at First United Methodist Church in Kearney, Nebraska from 4:00-8:00 pm.
