The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

He knew a firefighter needed a miniature version of himself to obsess over firetrucks and think that visiting Daddy at the firehouse was the equivalent of winning a million bucks. So God made a firefighter’s kid.

He knew a firefighter needed little humans bolting toward the door to hug him after a tiring shift like they were sprinting for an Olympic Gold Medal. So God made a firefighter’s kid.

He knew a firefighter needed an infectious giggle and adorable smile to FaceTime him goodnight and make his heart smile after he was on a heartbreaking call. So God made a firefighter’s kid.

He knew a firefighter needed a little person to keep his spouse company while he worked holidays and multiple nights per week for many, many years. So God made a firefighter’s kid.

He knew a firefighter needed a ray of sunshine after absorbing much of the world’s hurts. So God made a firefighter’s kid.

He knew a firefighter needed to continue to carry out his legacy by raising a little human who could make his own mark on the world and offer hope during the darkest days. So God made a firefighter’s kid.

Behind every proud firefighter’s kid is a hardworking hero, just praying they can carry out their calling and return home to the little humans bolting toward the door to hug them after a long shift. And that little firefighter kid is pretending to put out fires and tell everyone their daddy is a hero.

He knew a firefighter needed someone to hold down the fort while he works 100-hour work weeks and who could sleep alone multiple times per week for over 20 years. So God made a fire wife. He knew a firefighter needed someone who could spend evenings alone with a colicky newborn, holidays without him, attend sporting events solo with her kids, and handle nights alone taking care of sick babies. So God made a fire wife. He knew a firefighter needed someone to see all the little things that happen behind the scenes and the countless hours spent attending fire-rescue...

Under the yellow helmet and soot-covered jacket is the love of my life and father of my children. He is not the same man I married—he is even stronger, wiser, and has chosen a job of servanthood and danger. My husband is a firefighter and EMT. As an EMT, he performs CPR, saves diabetics in diabetic comas, treats fractures, delivers babies in the field, treats seizures, treats gunshot victims and victims who have been abused beyond what our brains can comprehend, administers oxygen therapy, and treats strokes, trauma/burns, and heart attacks. As a firefighter, he responds to bomb threats, extinguishes...

I Am the Wife of a First Responder

Back of ambulance

There are those who fight crime. There are those who fight fires. There are those who fight death. All of these fighters are brave, important and make a difference in the world. I bet you yourself have been changed by one of these humans who make the world a better place—one of these real-life superheroes. The lifesaving life is not for everyone. The only first responding I do is when my 5-year-old falls and requires a Band-Aid. I pass out at the sight of blood and get woozy seeing people’s bones out of joint. I am not one to be...
