Our Keepsake Journal is Here! 🎉

Hey mama,

I see you’re signing your boy up for Little League, so I feel I should warn you . . .

You’re signing up for more than endless sun-beaten hours, sitting on rickety old bleachers at a dust-swept ball field.

You’re also signing up for awkward first encounters with new parents.

For a backseat full of competitively rowdy (and stinky) boys.

For a pretty penny in shiny new equipment.

And for a lifetime supply of OxiClean with a membership to the “Where did you leave your jersey?” club.

But mama, I also feel you should know . . .

You’re signing up for those new parents to become a family like no other.

For those boys to become beloved sons that you root for as loud as your own.

For that tiny glove to become your most prized trophy.

For that dirty little uniform to become a precious keepsake.

And for those fleeting hours on well-loved bleachers, to become sun-drenched memories that last a lifetime.

So, while you’re about to sign your boy up for Little League . . .

You’re signing up to play a part in one of the greatest games.

You’re about to become a baseball mom.

You’re about to fall in love.

And mama? One more thing . . .

Years from today, you’ll look at the new moms signing up their little boys.

And you’ll see them the way I see you now. With sympathy for the trials they are about to endure, but more so, with envy for all of the triumphs yet to come . . .

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Dear Parents, Before You Let Your Child Quit Youth Sports

Basketball team

When I was a freshman in high school, my basketball team was small. In fact, it was so small we didn’t have a freshman or JV team. My coach was tough. He had high expectations and conducted physically and mentally demanding practices. I suited varsity, but only got in the last minute or two (if we were winning by enough). Essentially, I only had the opportunity to play in practice. However, I battled, knowing that next year could be my year. The beginning of my sophomore year was different. It was a huge disappointment for me. I still found myself...

Dear Coach, From a Mom in the Stands

Sports mom

Dear Coach,  I want you to know I respect and honor all the time you give helping build our children into adults. I know you take time away from our own family, to give to ours, and for that we thank you. You are one of the most influential people in my child’s life and it’s up to you as to how you will be remembered in their eyes and in mine.   Will you be the coach who builds up their spirit and teaches them more than the game? Or will you be the coach who screams at them and...

Born a Cubs Fan www.herviewfromhome.com

I live in the land of no major league baseball teams, also known as Nebraska. Sure, there are little league families, college baseball fans, and a sprinkling of loyal KC Royals fans. There’s always an exception to the rule; I am aware of that. But I’m from Chicago, and I was born a Cubs fan. Hands down, my beloved adopted home state of Nebraska can’t beat that. At least, not with baseball culture. College football is another story, for another day. I grew up winning Cubs tickets from our library’s summer reading program. Talk about setting the bar high—now my...
