After weeks of speculation about her whereabouts, Kate Middleton has surfaced with a shocking announcement: she’s been diagnosed with cancer.
In a video released Friday, Catherine, the Princess of Wales sits on an outdoor bench and speaks directly to the camera about her diagnosis. It follows a “planned abdominal surgery” announced by the Royal family in January. At that time, the Palace said Kate would not resume her Royal duties until Easter. At the time, Kate says, the procedure was believed to be for something non-cancerous.
After the surgery, it was determined cancer was present.
The type of cancer has not been disclosed, and Kate, 42, says she has been undergoing “preventative chemotherapy” since February.
In the video, which was filmed at Windsor Castle, Kate says, “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.”
Kate has been absent from the public eye since her January surgery. Last week, a photo released on her social media accounts was later pulled by media outlets because portions of it had been Photoshopped—adding fuel to rampant social media speculation about her well-being.
In the video, Kate talks about sharing the news with her young children—Kate and Prince William have three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 5. “It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok,” Kate said. She went on to say she’s told the children she is “well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.”
“Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too,” Kate adds.
For now, the Royal family is asking for privacy.
“We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”
We join the rest of the world in sending our heartfelt prayers for strength and healing to Princess Catherine.
