I didn’t realize trusting people with my kids would be difficult, but trusting you with them was so easy.⁣
⁣
I didn’t realize that you would still be the person I ran to for reassurance and comfort even when I became a mom.⁣

To a mama, resting means . . .⁣
⁣
Cleaning out closets⁣
Washing sheets⁣
Planning meals⁣
Buying groceries⁣
Folding clothes⁣
Picking up⁣
Researching everything⁣
⁣
We forget how to slow down. And stop. And rest.⁣
⁣
Mama, God holds today and tomorrow in His capable hands, and He assures us we can trust Him and enjoy Him and rest.⁣
⁣
The things that are waiting on us right now will still be waiting on us in 3 hours or 3 days, so let’s accept we’re always needed for the job. And that’s a good thing. But we must pace ourselves.⁣
⁣
Let’s not hurry ourselves along so much.⁣
⁣
Let’s make time today to delight in something that brings us peace. And let’s remember our work is good. But so is our rest.⁣
⁣
Rest from the busy.⁣
Rest from stress.⁣
Rest from comparison.⁣
Rest from worry.⁣
Rest from control.⁣
⁣
And delight in God’s goodness instead.⁣
⁣

Kids won’t tell you they’re having a hard time

Kids won’t tell you they’re having a hard time.⁣
⁣
They won’t tell you they’re overstimulated and dysregulated.⁣
⁣
They won’t tell you they need to decompress after holding it together for so long.⁣
⁣
They won’t tell you how much they want you . . . to just hold them.⁣
⁣
To not say anything sometimes, to just be there.⁣
⁣
Instead, their little bodies will quake and their sweet faces will twist into terrible grimaces and they will transform into unrecognizable squalls. Those big, overwhelming feelings that have been bubbling under the surface will boil over and scald everything in their wake, including you. In fact, you’ll be directly at the center of it all, holding on for dear life and trying to ride out the storm.⁣
⁣
Sometimes you will be caught off guard, or in public, or trying to do a million things at once, and immediately you will find that their reaction elicits a strong reaction in YOU.⁣
⁣
You will discover that maybe you’re having a hard time, and maybe you’ve been keeping it together for so long, and maybe you’re not quite as regulated as you thought.⁣
⁣
And sometimes you will lose it, too. You will lash out, and say harsh words, and you won’t be able to stop yourself. And you will feel ashamed and guilty, and berate yourself for not doing better, for not being a better mother.⁣
⁣
But then, instead of withdrawing, instead of leaving your child to figure out these feelings on their own, instead of letting your shame push you further away . . .⁣
⁣
You will start to repair.⁣
⁣
Because you still make mistakes. You still fail, sometimes every day. But now you also know the important thing is not that you fail, but what you do after.⁣
⁣
And maybe then you will hold them, just like they needed you to all along.⁣
⁣
Maybe then you will not say anything for a bit, just like you should have.⁣
⁣
And maybe then when you’re both ready, you will tell them you’re sorry.⁣
⁣
And your child will know that no matter what—even if it’s not perfect—you'll always be there to help them get through the hard times.⁣

They argued about everything yesterday.⁣
 There wasn’t a single thing that they could agree on.⁣
⁣
It wasn’t their best day as sisters.⁣
⁣
To top it off, yesterday evening, Coop took a fall and hurt her wrist pretty badly.⁣
⁣
And of course, she blamed her sister.⁣
 Through a bunch of tears, they argued about that too.⁣
⁣
It’s on days like these when I wonder what I’ve done wrong as a dad.⁣
⁣
But as I headed for bed last night, well after the kids were asleep, I walked into this.⁣
⁣
Sometimes love is hard and some days people are hard to love. But even on those days, when all is said and done, love just needs a hand. Reaching out over a pillow barrier. Saying, I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. I got you.⁣
