Co-parenting with the person who still has pieces of you shoved in their pockets is maybe one of the hardest things you’ll ever endure.

After the divorce papers are signed and filed away in a neatly labeled folder, you start a jerky dance with the same person that used to twist your wedding band around your finger late on Sunday afternoons.

With the slam of a gavel declaring finality on something you promised would be forever, you find yourself here—

Biting your tongue.
(Still celebrating their wins.)
Tightening your jaw.
(Still buying them a Christmas gift.)
Taking a deep breath.
(Still hosting birthday parties together.)

It certainly didn’t work out for you and him, but you harbor a wild hope that your bravado will hide the stitches in your heart that spell out his name.

Co-parenting is just a bland code word for “We couldn’t make it work together, but we’ll never stop trying to make it work for them.”

Co-parenting is just an easy way of saying that your holidays are scheduled out a year ahead of time, sports schedules are fit into his or her weekends like Tetris, and sometimes backseats are quiet and empty.

Co-parenting is just a safe way to say that your hands are still calloused from rebuilding your life, but they’re still soft enough to comfort a baby that misses the parent across town.

Your kids are your greatest gifts and that means they’re made up of the best of you and him and isn’t that beautiful?

And I guess what I mean to say that your kids are your greatest gifts and that means that even on the hard days? Even when the backseats are too quiet and when the house is too quiet and the bedroom at the end of the hallway is too dark—even then:

Even then, you make it work.

Because at the end of the day, co-parenting is just a bland, easy, safe way of saying

You can do hard things.

Mama, you GET to be the one. The one they run to

Mama, you GET to be the one.

The one they run to when they fall.

The one who jumps up when they call.

They’ll see what it means to be a mama who somehow just keeps on.

They’ll see what it means to lean into a Savior with a strength far beyond their own.

And as the roles seem to change, one thing will remain the same...

To them, sweet mama, you’ll always be the one.
