This.

They show up. Even when it’s windy and the dust

They show up.

Even when it’s windy and the dust blows so hard we can feel the grit in our teeth.

They show up.

Even when the temperatures drop and the sky turns dark well before they arrive home.

They show up.

Even though they showed up for the other grandkids the night before.

They show up.

In rain and snow and heat and wind, every season, every year. Recitals and track meets, basketball games, and band competitions. Every graduation, every 4-H competition, and everything in between.

Grandparents show up.

They keep folding chairs and stadium seats in the back of their car so they’re always available and have a few extra bucks in their pockets in case the concession stand serves popcorn. They cheer, hug, and smile for a picture with the grandkids before heading home to rest.

They show up.

Even though they don’t have to.

As an adult, I now realize most of life is just about showing up.

It’s support and care, encouragement and love without saying a word.

Because when my kids look into the stands and see a familiar face, they know unconditional love.

I know because that’s what I felt when they showed up for me.

It was her first time being away from me in almost

It was her first time being away from me in almost ten years.

A sleepover is a right of passage for many tweens—and a milestone I wasn’t sure we’d ever see.

But she has one best friend, a little girl we’ve known for six years. A little girl (and her Mama) who haven’t just taken the time to learn Campbell—they’ve learned autism too.

As evidenced by a bike.

Let me tell you a little secret: it’s not just the child with autism who benefits from inclusion. Campbell is the kind of friend people spend their whole lives searching for. She’s generous, never jealous, always filled with joy—and will love you not in spite of your differences, but because of them.

These girls mutually support each other.

And that kind of friendship is nothing short of magic.

Coaching youth sports is more than working on batt

Coaching youth sports is more than working on batting orders, field positions, and designing plays.

It’s more than managing schedule changes and coordinating with other coaches, league officials, and parents.

It’s more than carting around game bags, buckets of balls, and extra equipment everywhere you go.

It’s more than taking phone calls and answering emails from parents while on vacation, during a lunch break, or at a birthday party.

It’s more than scheduling time with your family and date nights with your spouse around tournaments, games, and practices.

It’s more than volunteering countless hours of your free time for the benefit of the kids.

It’s more than spending time learning what motivates each player and how to coach in a way that brings out their best.

It’s more than trying to let the passive-aggressive (and sometimes outwardly aggressive) comments from parents and spectators roll off your back.

It’s more than trying to find a way to balance fun with learning.

It’s more than finding the strength to be the team’s cheerleader when everyone’s hopes are dashed.

It’s more than a winning season.

So much more.

The truth is, we need those coaches more than we need wins.

We need those coaches who make our kids feel seen.

We need those coaches who can support our kids as they learn important life lessons.

We need those coaches who can help our kids find confidence when it’s nowhere to be found.

We need those coaches who can model winning humbly and losing gracefully.

We need those coaches who are willing to donate their time, hearts, and souls to our kids.

We need those coaches who are willing to step up to the plate, take the field, and run onto the court no matter the price.

Because it’s about so much more.
