**Editor’s Note. Rachel usually posts her gorgeous Nebraska shots on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. I forgot there were 5 Friday’s in this month. I asked her – (very last minute!) if she would consider posting for us today. Within minutes she said, “yes” and gave us an incredible story, too. Just another example of how FANTASTIC our feature writers are.
Rachel – thank you!! ~Leslie
The Silver Lining
My husband went to Utility Line school in Norfolk. The spring of his final semester, he participated in a ‘Lineman Rodeo’ in South Dakota. Basically, it’s a competition for utility line students. They compete in several different events individually as well as on teams.
On a bragging note, Sam won second place as Best All-Around Lineman. He competed against, oh, maybe 60 other students from tons of schools (even one from Arizona!). Yep. He’s awesome like that.
Anyways, we had a fun little road trip, just the two of us. Coming home we saw amazing clouds.
A big storm had just come through with a lot of rain. As a photographer, I’ve been known to pull over many times to grab a pretty picture. So we stopped to stretch our legs and get out the camera.
The sky that evening was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. The sunshine was streaming through these purple clouds, turning them all shades of gold. It was incredible. We enjoyed the view for awhile and then got back in the car to head home.
At least, that was the plan.
Then we saw some flashing lights in the rearview mirror. Oh no, I thought. What a way to end this fun weekend. Sam was speeding – not much, but enough to get the state trooper’s attention. While we were waiting for the trooper to run our information, I looked out my window and saw this…
I didn’t even get out of the car. I just grabbed my camera and rolled down my window. The breathtaking view from a few minutes before was even more beautiful with the silhouetted trees and the rays of sunlight. To this day, this picture is one of our favorite landscapes. And we never would have seen it if we hadn’t gotten pulled over in that exact spot on the highway.
We joked that we should track down that state trooper and send him a thank-you note with this picture attached! Talk about a silver lining to getting a speeding ticket.
