The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

There’s something special about college friends. The ones who watched as you learned to care for yourself, complete with laundry mishaps and burnt ramen. Who witnessed the failed relationships, sitting by your side with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s while they reminded you of all the reasons you were too good for him anyway. The ones who shared the late-night walk home and early morning classes in day-old makeup and sweats.

A friendship formed through inside jokes, frat parties, last-minute study sessions, and greasy breakfast at 2 a.m. Who went along with your crazy ideas, creating stories retold at every opportunity.

They were there when you graduated, heading out into the world where your first career waited. They were there when you met the one. They were bridesmaids, and travel partners, and babysitters, and therapists.

These are the friends who know you better than your parents. They know your dreams. They know your secret disappointments. They have cheered you on and cheered you up.

They saw you through the challenges of motherhood, divorce, the death of parents, and medical challenges. The ones whose kids call you auntie even though you’re not related. Sisters by choice, not blood.

And while you may only get together at too random intervals, when you do, it’s like you’re back in that old, rundown college apartment, laughing over cheap pizza and cheaper beer.

Because while years continue to pile up between the girl you were and the woman you’ve become, with college friends, time remains unmoving, friends forever, young and hopeful.

Give Me Friends to Do Everyday Life With

She sees me coming. A small wave from her house window and a silent invitation to come on over for our morning coffee. An unsaid invitation to connect with someone who gets the joys and challenges of being a mother. A quick, small, and valued break from life and stress and my house messes has become the perfect way to start the morning. A neighbor who has become a dear friend. Prior to this encounter, alarm clocks were ringing, breakfast was made, backpacks were packed, and shoes were missing. School mornings are rough. Motherhood is rough. The world around us...

There’s Something Special about Old Friends

College of pictures of friends, black-and-white photo

There is much to be said about old friends. In quotes, in the five regrets of the dying, in The Golden Girls theme song. But life gets busy, doesn’t it? It gets complicated—marriages, jobs, kids, errands. Friendships that were once part of us seem to fade into the background as lives grow and shift.  Being the always optimist, the queen of nostalgia, the friend who probably holds on just a little too tight, I have always seen the value in the old. The familiar. I’m the person who orders the same menu item every time at my favorite restaurant. I’m...

I Want Friends Who Grow Old with Me

In: Friendship, Living
Friends laughing

When I grow older, I want my friends to come with me. I want us to sit on porches sipping tea and watching the young walk by. I want us to scoot around on our scooters or on golf carts because none of us want to walk back home from the beach. I want us to sit in restaurants and order whatever we want because life has become too short and we know it, so cheesecake it is. RELATE: Life is Too Short for Fake Cheese and Fake Friends I want morning strolls together to get the willies out, and...
