While she sleeps, I’ll hold her small fingers. I’ll stare at her tiny fingernails with the white little tips. I’ll gaze at her tiny sweet lips and thigh wrinkles. I’ll do all of this while she sleeps.

Dear Daughter, Do Not Be Perfect

In: Child, Journal, Relationships

My child. I don’t want you to be perfect. People will say that you are when you are quiet and sit in your chair without fidgeting.  When you get top marks or come in first.  When you meet their every expectation. But you are not perfect. Do you hear me? You are NOT perfect. And I’ll never expect you to be. Ever. It’s important for you to know this because it’s so easy to believe that THAT is what is expected from you. But it’s not. It’s so important for you to know this because you’re going to mess up....

Raising Daughters is a Work of the Heart

In: Motherhood
Four sisters walking on grass

Sugar and spice, and everything nice. That’s what girls are (supposed to be) made of. But, what about grit? Determination. Perseverance. Diligence. Hard work. And bravery? What about sass? Leadership skills. Intelligence. Fierce. Bold. And fiery ice? What about compassion? Kindness. Grace. Integrity. Humility. And empathy? Raising a daughter is a swirling whirlwind of skinned knees, glitter explosions, bossy looks without a word said, and tenderheartedness. A beautiful concoction only made possible by the intricate handiwork of her Father Above. Raising girls is a work of heart. And nothing less. It’s nursing her through her first weeks and months, only...

Dear Daughter, I Dreamed of You

In: Motherhood
Little girl sleeping, color photo

I watch her sleeping peacefully, and I wonder who she’ll be. I wonder what will matter to her. I wonder who she’ll let through her walls, who she’ll trust with her secrets, who she’ll love. She doesn’t know how long I prayed for her. She doesn’t know how long I dreamed I’d be a precious baby’s mama. So now that she’s here and now that my years with her are flying by so quickly, I wonder what our relationship will look like as she grows. I know I’m the one who will guide it. I know our walk together will...
