The alarm goes off and all you want to do is hit snooze, but you can’t. The morning dawn is fully awake and invites you to join. Before you open your eyes you pray today will be different and not another carbon copy of yesterday or the day before. You whisper your hearts desire to the Lord and pray that he gives you strength to get through the day. Then you take a deep breath.
You inhale then exhale several times over, envisioning each passing breath as something that will help power you for the day. This gives you enough strength to swing your legs over the side of the bed and place your feet on the floor. The day has begun.
Mornings look different to all of us. Some of us hit snooze while some fly out of bed and join the birds in a morning song. Many of you are answering the cries of hungry children in desperate need of cereal, pop tarts, or french toast sticks. There are those of you that are rushing about getting ready for work, or having coffee with your loved one as you enjoy retirement. Whatever your morning looks like just know that you are important. Wherever you find yourself in life, remember, you matter. Regardless of how different our mornings or lives seem, we are at the core simply human. We are all longing for a place to connect, to belong, and a have a purpose. We all desire to invest in others and for others to invest in us. But more often than not, all of us get so wrapped up in our own world that we forget the simple things. We walk around with blinders on and miss thousands of opportunities to make someone’s day a little brighter.
Today in church the pastor challenged us to make a difference. Whether we go to a 9-5 job, manage a household, own a business, or are traveling the world, we all have the power to make a difference in the lives of people. God has surrounded us with people who need us, and we need them.
I challenge you to purposefully invest in others, beyond what you do on a normal day. Do you see that lady in the grocery store shopping alone? Walk up to her and simple tell her how beautiful she is. Look into her eyes as you say it. For example, “Ma’am, excuse me, but I just wanted to tell you how beautiful you are!” It will be uncomfortable for many of you, but it will also be one of the most beautiful things you experience. Most of the time they will be in complete shock that a stranger took the time to notice them and go so far as to compliment them. Some will cry and tell you they haven’t been told that in a long time. Go ahead, I challenge you.
Trust me when I say that this simple investment will have a lasting impact. As I finish this article I simply want each of you to have amazing you are. You are strong, vibrant, loving, beautiful people and you matter.
