A Gift for Mom! 🤍

I love full-circle moments, and in honor of Father’s Day, here’s a fun one involving my one-of-a-kind dad.

One of my dad’s absolute favorite books to read to me during my childhood was My Dad is Brilliant by Nick Butterworth. My dad always liked this book in particular because it showcased a dad doing cool things and being involved, and in a way, the book represented him. I loved it when he would read it to me because it confirmed what I already knew: dads could be “brilliant” and fun.

It was a rare book featuring a present dad during a time when dads weren’t typically as hands-on. And even though I was a little girl, I always knew I was extra lucky to have one of the involved dads.

The dad who braided my hair before school. The dad who worked at my school during lunch just so he could see me because at the time he worked afternoons. The dad who would bike ride with me for miles and always take me for a slushie after. The dad who tucked me in whenever he arrived home from work and always made sure to read books to me.

I’m still extra lucky to have one of the involved dads, and now I get to witness my kids having one of the involved papas as well. It is the sweetest thing seeing my dad with my kids, realizing now what I’ve known all along: my dad really is “brilliant.”

And when I walked into the local library recently and saw what I thought was the book we adored so long ago, I couldn’t help but grab it. But to my surprise, this one featured a mom and is called My Mom is Fantastic. It felt like a full-circle moment, so, of course, I bought it. And if my kids grow up to think I’m half as “fantastic” as I think my dad is “brilliant,” I’ll take it.

My Dad Asked Me to Lunch When I Needed It Most

When I was about 14 years old, I was in that stubborn phase where I didn’t talk to my parents a whole lot. You know, going to my room, shutting the door, talking to my friends, gaining my independence. You know, a teenager. My dad didn’t quite know how to get me out of that obstinate phase, although he was pretty close to Superman if you ask me. Wise and smart and strong and funny and a hero. Even so, I kept to myself and my friends in that stubborn mode I was in. Until that summer. My dad asked...

Atop My Daddy’s Shoulders

Child on father's shoulders

Atop my daddy’s shoulders, the world seemed vast—endless, limitless. I could see the treetops, the tops of heads. I could nearly touch the clouds. It was my best, most favorite place in the whole world to be sitting. My hands cupped safely around his chin, my knees gripped tightly in his rugged arms, I felt protected, strong, and invincible. I was aboard the shoulders of my hero. If it wasn’t for needing to nap or go potty, I would have never come down. One day without warning, I noticed the distance between my daddy’s shoulders and the ground below no...

My Dad Showed Me the Greatest Lessons Are Taught Through Example

Waiting at the window, I arranged the blue ruffles on my brand new dress and flipped my hair around to look just right. It was a night to be fancy. It was my first date. My face was flushed as I looked forward to the night ahead. I knew it was a big deal to be taken out and I would get special treatment. I would pick the restaurant and maybe we would have some ice cream and walk around downtown before the sun went down. After that, I was pretty sure we could go to the store and that...
