I watch you sometimes—when I’m pretty certain I watch you sometimes—when I’m pretty certain you don’t know I’m looking.⁣
⁣
When you’re doing your thing.⁣
⁣
When you’re being you apart from me.⁣
⁣
And it’s in those moments that I see most clearly: you are such a masterpiece.⁣
Sometimes I forget that. I get frazzled. Exhausted. Overwhelmed. Busy. Annoyed. Frustrated. Blinded.⁣
⁣
This motherhood thing is messy and complicated and sometimes I’m not sure I’m really cut out for it.⁣
⁣
When I’m in the middle of fixing snacks and folding laundry and picking up broken crayons for the umpteenth time that day . . . I allow you to feel like a chore. Another thing on my to-do list.⁣
⁣
Take care of the kids—annnnnd check.⁣
⁣
I go about my days with the end goal of getting us all to bedtime, and I fail to see you for the beautiful, incredible human beings that you are.⁣
⁣
I overlook how amazing it is that you are mine and I am yours and somehow, somewhere in this life—we were given to one another.⁣
⁣
Sometimes it takes a big step back to see the whole picture clearly. So today I watched you, and I was reminded . . .⁣
⁣
You, my loves, are the greatest gifts my hands will ever hold. And I’ll never let go.⁣

It’s my turn to have some sleepless nights.⁣
⁣
It’s my turn for late-night snacks, so I don’t have to share.⁣
⁣
It’s my turn to have my clothes stretched out by little hands.⁣
⁣
It’s my turn to have fingerprints on the screen door.⁣
⁣
It’s my turn to earn my laugh lines and gray hairs.⁣
⁣
It’s my turn to soak up the beautiful, exhausting, magic of motherhood while the turn is still mine.⁣

The first person I call is mom. When I don’t un The first person I call is mom.

When I don’t understand the insurance bill.

When someone says something mean to me.

When I need advice on how to care for my kiddos.

When I need someone to tell me it’s going to be okay.

When I have a question about literally anything.

When my heart is heavy.

When I need directions on how to make food.

When I need to hear the hard truth.

When I’m bored.

When I’m anything, really.

The first person I call is mom.

To see what she thinks, to hear what she would do, or to just get comforted by the voice of the one who has always been there.

She may not have all the answers, but sometimes I don’t need the answers.

Sometimes I just need my mom.

So I call.

I hope my kids will do the same with me.

In this stage of life, your hormones are a freakin In this stage of life, your hormones are a freaking train wreck. Half the time you will feel exactly like you did when you were pregnant. Emotional. Tired. Fluffffffffy.⁣
⁣
This stage of life is filled with weird doctor appointments with the words “premenopausal,” “genetics,” and “incontinence.” Your body starts to fail you in your mid-40s and it ticks you off. You are NOT that old, dang it.⁣
⁣
In this stage of life, you forget everything. Pick-up times. School events. Your neighbor’s name.⁣
⁣
In this stage of life, you start getting a whole new perspective of how little you know and how much you jacked up earlier in life. You start getting this incredible understanding of how God’s grace is enough to cover all of your mess-ups.⁣

To the breastfeeding mom,⁣ ⁣ Don't judge the f To the breastfeeding mom,⁣
⁣
Don't judge the formula-feeding mom for “not getting the same bonding experience.” She may not have been able to produce enough milk. Or maybe her baby didn’t latch, and she was in pain. Or maybe she had the baby blues. She’s not lazy or a bad mom because “breast is best.” What she’s dealing with every day is harder than you know.⁣
⁣
To the formula-feeding mom,⁣
⁣
Don’t judge the breastfeeding mom. Don’t tell her that her baby would sleep through the night with formula or is “too skinny.” What she’s dealing with every day is harder than you know.⁣
⁣
To the working mom,⁣
⁣
Don’t judge the stay-at-home mom for being “just” a stay-at-home mom. Don’t assume she hangs out all day catching up on reality shows. She’s comforting her preschooler, cleaning up non-stop messes, and rocking a fussy baby to sleep. What she’s dealing with every day is harder than you know.⁣
⁣
To the stay-at-home mom,⁣
⁣
Don’t judge the working mom for missing out when she’s struggling to find the balance. She feels so much guilt not being able to volunteer. What she’s dealing with every day is harder than you know.⁣
⁣
And don’t judge the mom who homeschools, co-sleeps, baby-wears, and lets her kids use iPads, etc.⁣
⁣
There’s a lot that’s broken for mothers in our society.⁣
⁣
No matter how she parents, being a mom is hard.⁣
⁣
So, let's be messy together because we know:⁣
