The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

Dear LeRoy,

If only I had truly grasped the legacy you would leave, I promise I would have spoken these words to you years ago. Thank you. From your grandsons’ wives, thank you.

When I fell in love with your grandson, I had not yet realized he got so much of his goodness from you—his wit, his joyfulness, his excitement to embrace the latest technologies, his research tendencies to find only the best within his budget, his curiosity. His patience with his imperfect wife, his wisdom beyond his youth, his movie star hair—all of it came from you.

You taught him there are no limits to what he can accomplish. That he can overcome impossible obstacles as long as he has determination, an eagerness to learn, and Jesus on his side. You taught him to always be positive and never to ask “Why me?”

Most importantly, you helped teach him how to be a godly man, a devoted husband, a loving father, and someday, the best grandfather imaginable.

I hope you know your grandchildren consider you a hero. You were one of the most important people in their lives and one who had a strong presence in molding them into the people they are today. They know everything you did was with them in mind.

For all of these things and more, I can’t thank you enough. Because of your faithfulness to God and the love you poured out, your legacy will continue to bless my future through our marriage and the lives of our children.

Your family celebrates your life. We rejoice with you. And more eagerly now than ever, we look forward to the time we will see you again.

Love,
Christina

I’ve Sat on the Shoulders of a Giant Named Grandpa

Little girl on Grandpa's shoulders

There are those who have served with such bravery and such valor that they have changed the course of the world. They are the giants. And as it is said, we can see farther into the goodness and possibility of this life because we’ve been lifted by these mighty shoulders. I have been upon one such giant’s shoulders. They called him Sergeant. I called him Grandpa. He knew volunteering to join ranks and defend the country, the world. I knew the warmth of his lap for a story. He knew the terror of foxholes. I knew the calm he brought...

Memories Fill the Holes in Their Hearts Where a Grandpa’s Love Should Be

Drawing, journal, and photo of man, color photo

“Girls, come here for a minute.” In some sort of yearly ritual, I guide my oldest two daughters to my bedroom, where a wooden chest sits. It’s painted in flowers of muted colors and has a brass keyhole on it, making it look like an antique. It isn’t. It’s only 20 years old. As my girls follow me into my room, I grab the skeleton key off my dresser that unlocks the wooden chest. I turn the key and open the wooden box that holds so many pieces that are supposed to remind me of my dad.  Pictures of him....

God Bless the Grandpas

In: Kids
Grandpa hugging teen girl

God bless the grandpas. God bless the grandpas who get to their grandkids’ awards ceremonies ahead of them and are waiting there to give them a hug, so that the best part of the day doesn’t happen on the stage but in the hallway. God bless the grandpas who solve problems, so that when something breaks, their grandchildren say with absolute assurance, “Grandpa will fix it.” God bless the grandpas who spend hours patiently playing ball in the yard, long after mom or dad would have had to (or would have wanted to) move on to other things. RELATED: So...
