The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

When we got married, I never thought things would turn out this way.

When we got married, 14 years ago, we had been dating for seven years already. We just knew we would eventually be married, there was never really a question about it. We were just super comfortable with each otherbest friends almost.

I had a friend from school who always tried to convince me that we lacked passion. We were “too comfortable.” We were too easy, there was no drama, no fireworks.

But I came from a dramatic childhooda dysfunctional family filled with fireworks (and not the good kind)and so having a safe, easy place in the presence of the man I loved, felt better than I could ever explain.

Our marriage has been a comfortable one; we don’t have big fights or yell at each other. Maybe to some it is because we lack that passion, but I love life this way. I love knowing where we stand together. I love knowing I can trust him and always count on him to be there for me.

Our relationship consists more of friendship than passion although our two children are the living proof of our desire for each other. But, I love it this way. Because if passion was all we built on, we would not have lasted. Because life throws so many curveballs at us, that passion wouldn’t have sustained our team.

Passion would not have sustained us when I got diagnosed with a debilitating condition and placed on medication that left me a shell of who he fell for. Friendship did. Mutual respect did.

Passion would have died if that was all we had when I hit that dreadful perimenopause phase of life when being intimate was uncomfortable and even painful at times and my moods were not enjoyable for anyone, when the ever-growing list of symptoms was dictating our lives.

But instead we had love, friendship, and respect. And because we had that foundation, we figured it all out, together. We overcame things together that passion could never.

Today, we are still happy together, and we have each other’s backs—through thick and thin, no matter what life throws at us. I couldn’t imagine doing life without him by my side.

When we got married, I never thought things would turn out this way. It turned out so much better than I thought.

I Love My Girlfriends, But My Husband is My Best Friend

In: Friendship, Marriage
Husband and wife eating ice cream and laughing

In my 20s and teens, friendship looked a little different than it does now in my 30s married with children. Friendship, in all its forms, has many variations from when we were little and continues to evolve as we age. In Pre-K, my friend at that time had pretty hair, and we liked to play with each other’s long locks and accessorize it with bows and frilly headbands. In elementary school, my friends lived in my neighborhood, and we liked to play in the cul-de-sac after school and enjoy an ice cream truck treat until the street lights turned on. ...

Dear Husband, I Choose You Every Day for the Rest of Our Lives

Couple laughing by the water

We renewed our vows yesterday. Not with a big party in front of all our family and friends. I didn’t put on a white dress, there was no tux, and we didn’t pay for a hall or buy a new wedding band. We renewed our vows in front of a sink full of dirty dishes, with the washer and dryer going,  just the two of us, under a sign that says “in this kitchen we dance.” Our kids were bickering in the background, and we looked at each other with “how did we get here?” in our eyes. But then...

Can I Let You in On a Secret? This is Real Love.

Man pushing grocery cart

He always pushes the grocery cart. And when we get back to the truck, he always unlocks the doors immediately so that I can get in, and then proceeds to unload the groceries, while I’m sat in the truck with the seat warmers on. Rain or shine—every time—this is our grocery game plan. Can I let you all in on a little secret? It’s taken me many years to appreciate being loved like this. You see, I spent (i.e., wasted) a lot of time looking for all the ways in which love is shown in the movies, in the magazines,...
