The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

Hey there, busy mom! Why don’t you take a minute? Put down that phone and just look at your kiddo. No need to say anything or even interact. Just watch him do his thing.

Check out the way she talks and sings to herself while she’s coloring. Notice how he seems to jump and skip and run everywhere he goes instead of walk? Yeah, those pants don’t match that shirt, but hey, she dressed herself this morning. See how he belly laughs at his favorite new show, eyes closing for a second in glee?

That little face is going to change sooner than you think. See those chubby cheeks, still hanging on to a bit of baby fat? Someday soon, that baby face is going to disappear, replaced by a big kid face. Those plump little hands that are always so sticky and constantly seeking yours? Someday soon, those hands will be as big as yours and not into coloring or finger painting or holding your hand just because.

These days of being little fly right on by. So take a minute, busy mom. Slow down for a second, and soak it in. Watch how their eyes light up over seeing a bird land on the feeder outside the window. Look at how they eat their sandwich, jelly smearing on both sides of their cheeks. File those memories away, mama, because they won’t last long.

So today, right now, take a minute, busy mom. You’ll be glad you did!

The Secret to Slowing Down Time Is to Notice the Moments You’re Living In

In: Kids, Motherhood

Dear current self, You’ve heard a lot of mothers admonish you to slow down and enjoy every moment with your children. They’ve warned you with phrases like “before you know it,”  “in the blink of an eye,” and other cliché’s that haven’t really hit you, but they will. Soon, they will. I am writing you now because I’ve seen you trying to wrap your mind around the how-to—as if holding time in your hand is a skill anyone has successfully mastered. I’ll save you the suspense. It can’t be done. It is inevitable. Your kids are going to grow up....

Sometimes Growth Is Tangible, and When It Is You Hold On Tight

I never expected my sign to come in the form of a plastic bag. As a parent, you’re told over and over how fast it all goes, to cherish these times because they’re gone in a blink. You see the gradual changes in your kids as they move through milestones. One day, they can hold their own spoon. They begin stringing words into sentences. Their ages are counted in years and no longer months. You watch these things happen every day, but I didn’t realize some transitions would come in tangible ways, like a grocery bag filled with wet swim...

Mother with son and daughter, color photo

Motherhood is messy, exhausting, and at times filled with self-doubt, but motherhood is also beautiful, with a soul discovering love that dwells deep within.  Some days will seem like a total failure. It’s expected. Even on those days, the moments in between glimmer. In between the exhaustion of sleepless nights and late feedings, you wrap your precious little fingers around mine. The sweet softness of your scrumptious baby cheeks rests against my chest.  RELATED: The Nights Are So Long Among the piles of dirty laundry and the towels that haven’t been folded, sit a pair of tiny white socks. A...
