DIY Barn Door Wall Art

I have to be honest, I’ve had a perfectly worn half of a barn door in my garage for about 4 years. FOUR YEARS! It was just waiting for the perfect project.

And I had the perfect place for it in our cute little guest room.  The room is decorated in tan, grey, yellow and black, so the grey of the barn door would look perfect.  Isn’t that area above the bed just screaming for some decor?

Here’s the other side of the room. That dresser and mirror belonged to my grandparents, then I used it growing up and my mom used it for quite awhile but now it’s in my home, probably forever! I think it’s been painted about four different times now!

I forgot to take photos of the barn door before, but know that it is this beautiful shade of gray, has just the right amount of chippy white paint on it and incredibly rusted hinges!  It also had a lot of dust and cobwebs on it. So I brushed it down with a deck brush without damaging the white chippy paint, then vacuumed all the nooks and crannies.  I then wanted to seal it because it’s going right above where people will be sleeping, want to avoid any loose pieces falling on them. I chose this Valspar clear sealer in Flat and I think it worked great. it was super easy to spray on and dried quickly.

Next I propped the door up on my painting easel and used some chalk to freehand the word “hello” onto the board. I had to erase it a couple times before I got it right.

Then weathered the “hello” a bit with some sand paper.

Oh my, it’s so adorable and fits perfectly!  The hubs helped me hang it because it’s rather heavy. We hammered two long nails into the studs in the wall as well as attaching picture wire through eye screws (I think that’s what they are called!) to the back, so it’s not going anywhere!DIY Barn Door Wall ArtI’m so happy with how it turned out. I hope our guests enjoy it too!
