It’s Christmas week, and I’m sure you have a to do list that is a mile long!
While this is supposed to be the most wonderful time of year, it can often be filled with stress. Last week, I found myself laying on the couch with an ice pack on my head trying to quickly relieve a headache because I felt like I had too much to do. My headache was caused by my busy schedule!
As I was laying there feeling stressed about all that I had to finish before the holiday arrived, I realized that I didn’t really have all those warm fuzzy Christmas feelings. I wasn’t feeling the holiday spirit.
When we’re kids, the holidays feel effortlessly magical. But as adults, we have to do a little work to feel that magic. We have to let go of some of the things on our to do lists, and make the time and effort to feel the way we want to feel during the holidays.
Over the weekend, I put aside my to do list and spent time doing the things that I love about the holidays – baking Christmas cookies with my mom, watching cheesy Christmas movies, wrapping gifts by the Christmas tree and listening to Christmas music.
It now feels like Christmas, and I’m going into the week feeling less stressed. I have those warm fuzzy Christmas feelings that I long for each year.
So how did I create the magic of Christmas? By taking care of myself.
Ask yourself – How do I want to feel this week?
Maybe your answer is peaceful, happy, loved, excited or grateful.
How can you create those feelings? It’s most likely not by running around like a crazy person trying to get everything done. It’s time to delegate tasks, and make time for the things that you enjoy about the holidays!
Make a list of three things that you love to do during the holidays, but haven’t had time for yet. For me, it’s driving around looking at Christmas lights, watching Elf and enjoying a holiday date night with my boyfriend. My house may not be spotless and Christmas gifts may be mailed late, but I’m going to make time for those things because I know they will help me feel less stressed and give me more warm fuzzy holiday feelings.
