The Sweetest Mother's Day Gift!

Just over four years ago my husband and I made the decision to begin attending church together. We had undergone a heartbreaking miscarriage, and my heart felt like it needed something significant to heal, and so we thought we’d give faith and God a try.

It wasn’t like either of us had never been to church before, but it had been a long while, and we weren’t quite sure what to expect. My husband had gone to church throughout most of his childhood, and I had gone a bit more sparingly but at the current time neither of us felt connected to any type of religion or faith system. What happened as we began attending our small, non-traditional church was the significant change we needed. The music spoke to my soul as did the church messages each week, and several months after continuing to attend, we were blessed with a second pregnancy.

Flash forward just a few years, and now we continue to attend this same church with our two boys: Logan who is four years old and full of energy and Noah who is almost 9 months old with the sweetest smile as he starts to crawl in order to keep up with his big brother. This church has changed our lives significantly. We have never prayed more, connected with others more, worshipped more, or read the Bible more than we do now. But something else has also happened . . . our son Logan has begun to love church in so many amazing ways.

Each week Logan attends the kid ministry environment at our church (often known as Sunday school at some churches), and he has leaders (both young teenagers and adult volunteers) who just pour into him in so many different ways. Logan walks into his kid room at church with a huge smile on his face and almost doesn’t want to leave when we arrive to pick him up as the service concludes. He plays, he listens to Bible stories, he sings worship songs and dances along each Sunday. But most importantly? My son learns about Jesus and is learning to love Jesus.

These volunteers who pour love into my son each week at church have taught him Bible verses. I remember one afternoon driving home from church as my son recited John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son.” Picture this paired with some pretty awesome hand motions and imagine how cute it was! These volunteers have taken the time to explain God and faith and Jesus to my son. He’s arrived home sharing with us things he’s learned. Just today one of the adult volunteers told me how great our son did in the kid room. I asked Logan what he learned and what he talked about, and he told me “I learned that God brings us joy, and He is always near us.”

Week after week, I get to witness my son learning to love Jesus again and again and again. Although I won’t be able to dictate where either of my boys go with their faith as they grow older, I know if I continue to bring them to church and surround them with these wonderful volunteers, they will get to learn about Jesus. They will learn that Jesus loves them, and how they can love Jesus and love others. And at the end of the day, I am so thankful for that. I couldn’t be more blessed to have these special volunteers in my sons’ lives to teach them to love Jesus.

I Don’t Want To Raise Church Kids, I Want To Raise Jesus Kids

I don’t want to raise church kids. That’s right. I DO NOT want to raise church kids.  Matter of fact, it’s one of my biggest fears. That they would go to church every week of their lives and never experience what the whole purpose of church is really about. That they would come and learn about God, but never actually seek and find Him for themselves. That they would come and learn the stories of the Bible, but never realize that they too are a Bible story waiting to happen. That their life is woven into the tapestry of life...

Taking Kids To Church is Hard But Beautiful Work

Girl in pew Sunday morning

It had been a busy morning. No one had their shoes on when it was time to go. No one had all their things ready and needed to be told multiple times to get to the car. We were rushing to get to our seats as the bell was ringing. I sat there with my three little ducklings who I had rushed through the last hour with. Silent. In our church, staring at the beautiful windows adorned with pictures of galaxies, I heard a voice, “You can breathe, you did your work well. Be at peace.” RELATED: To the Distracted...

Sometimes I Feel Like a Failing Mama in Church, But Today Was Different

Mom with kids in church

I have been pulling solo-parenting duty during church for three years now. My husband is in the church choir so my role is to primarily be a mom and secondarily, praise the Lord. So, I sit in the pew with my little blonde-headed minion and make every attempt to keep her quiet and happy while also trying to glean some sort of inspirational joy and passion from the message and feel Christ’s presence in our congregation. It’s not God’s fault, but I rarely feel inspired. I spend so much time focusing on keeping my child from kicking the back of...
